The Cubs recently cut ties with Miguel Montero after he threw his teammates under the bus, so Rivera would give the club a veteran option to back up Willson Contreras. Trevor Cahill will make his Royals debut on Saturday against the Red Sox.

Cahill was acquired from the Padres on Monday as part of a six-player deal. The resurgent 29-year-old has posted a 3.69 ERA and 72/24 K/BB ratio in 61 innings over 11 starts this season while also missing time with a shoulder injury. It's a tough first matchup, but the Royals are hoping he can be a stabilizing force for their rotation down the stretch.
