Mariners recalled RHP Brandon Maurer from Triple-A Tacoma.
Maurer will get the start on Sunday versus the Marlins, replacing Blake Beavan (shoulder) in the rotation. The right-hander was pitching mostly as a reliever at Tacoma and will be on a limited pitch count. He can go unowned in fantasy leagues.
Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald writes that Daniel Nava is a "prime candidate to be sent down" when Shane Victorino (hamstring) returns from the disabled list.
Nava was excellent for the Red Sox last season, but he's hit just .136/.239/.271 this year and has options remaining. With Jackie Bradley stabilizing the team's defense in center field, Grady Sizemore has been pushed to left and Nava apparently to Triple-A. Victorino is expected to be activated on Wednesday or Thursday.
Jackie Bradley is expected to remain the Red Sox' starting center fielder after Shane Victorino (hamstring) comes off the disabled list.
There was little doubt at this point, as Bradley has started 10 straight games in center field and Grady Sizemore is starting to settle in as the left fielder. Bradley is batting just .220/.339/.280 with no homers and two steals this season, but, according to manager John Farrell, has "solidified the defense in center field for us." Daniel Nava is hitting just .136/.239/.271 and has options remaining, making him a "prime candidate to be sent down," writes Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.
White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Saturday that Adam Eaton (hamstring) will sit out at least three games.
Eaton injured both his hamstring and ankle on Friday and then aggravated the hamstring ailment Saturday. The White Sox are calling it a mild strain, but they want to be safe and hold the outfielder out for at least a few days. "It’s really right behind his knee," Ventura said. "Probably a few days just to monitor and see. It should be back in time. He just couldn’t get out of the box. When he’s pushing to get out of the box is when he really feels it. He can run and probably run better than most. It’s just safer not to run him out there and maybe do something worse."
Brandon Phillips went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts in his return to the lineup Saturday.
Phillips exited Friday's game with back spasms but was feeling good enough to return to the lineup the next day. It shouldn't be an issue for him going forward.
Jordy Mercer flew out as a pinch-hitter in Saturday's loss to the Brewers.
Mercer was removed from Friday's game after getting spiked in the ankle while trying to turn a double play. He seems likely to be back in the lineup Sunday.
Ike Davis finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored Saturday in his Pirates debut.
Davis doubled in his first at-bat, walked in his second at-bat, and singled in his third at-bat. He's expected to start versus right-handers and seems poised to hit near the middle of the Pirates' batting order, making him a worthwhile add in most mixed fantasy leagues. Davis tallied 32 home runs and 90 RBI in 2012 with the Mets.
Joakim Soria earned his third save of the season Saturday in the Rangers' 6-3 victory over the White Sox.
Soria pitched a perfect ninth, retiring Tyler Flowers, Jordan Danks, and Alejandro De Aza in order. He hit a few road bumps earlier this month, but he's back on track now and will try to build on his current job security.
