Astros first-round pick Mark Appel is expected to make several minor league starts this season.

Appel, the No. 1 overall selection in this year's draft, officially signed with Houston in a ceremony Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. He'll head to the Astros' spring training complex next week for workouts before being assigned to a minor league affiliate. The talented 21-year-old righty could reach the majors by late 2014.

Brett Lawrie (ankle) took grounders and some light batting practice on Wednesday afternoon.

It's a nice step in the right direction for the young third baseman, who injured his ankle on a slide on May 27. He should be cleared to run the bases in about one week. Then comes the minor league rehab assignment. The best guess right now is that he's back in early July.
Jun 19 - 4:25 PM

Jose Reyes (ankle) will join Triple-A Buffalo on Friday to continue his rehab assignment.

He'll be just one step away from activation at that point. Reyes, who has been on the shelf since April 12 with a severe ankle sprain, is 5-for-12 through his first three rehab games at High-A Dunedin. He should be back in the Blue Jays' starting lineup in less than a week.

An MRI taken Wednesday on Brandon Morrow's troublesome right forearm showed no major damage.

Morrow felt lingering discomfort in his forearm Monday after going two innings in a rehab start at High-A Dunedin. He will refrain from throwing for a week or so to let the inflammation that is bothering him go away. Morrow remains sidelined indefinitely.

Trevor Cahill was pulled from Wednesday's game against the Marlins after taking a line drive off his leg.

Cahill got hit on the leg in the first inning and tried to come out to pitch the second but couldn't make it through his warmup tosses. He threw a scoreless first frame. It did not appear to be a serious injury.

Mets placed RHP Scott Atchison on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain.

Atchison suffered the injured while warming up during Tuesday's doubleheader. The veteran right-hander just made it back after missing a month with elbow inflammation, but now he'll need to miss at least two more weeks.
Jun 19 - 3:59 PM

Coco Crisp is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Rangers.

No word on the reason for his absence, though he has been bothered by a heel injury recently. Chris Young is starting in center field.
Jun 19 - 3:44 PM

Eric Young, Jr. will bat leadoff and start in center field in his Mets' debut Wednesday against the Braves.

Young was acquired from the Rockies on Tuesday night in exchange for right-hander Collin McHugh. The 28-year-old was batting just .242/.290/.352 with the Rockies this season, but he has plenty of speed and could receive regular playing time in the Mets' outfield. He's someone to keep in mind in deeper mixed formats if you need stolen bases.
