Giants designated RHP Vin Mazzaro for assignment.

The 29-year-old right-hander had a night that will haunt him forever on Thursday, surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on six hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an inning. Provided he passes through waivers unclaimed, he'll continue to serve as organizational bullpen dept at Triple-A.

The Cardinals announced Friday that Carlos Martinez was lifted from his start against the Pirates due to fatigue.

He will be reassessed on Saturday. It's certainly encouraging news that there doesn't appear to be an injury at play here for the young right-hander, and it sounds as though he could stay on track to make his next scheduled start. Look for an update on his status on Saturday.

Eduardo Escobar was forced to leave Friday's game against the White Sox with a strained left groin.

The injury doesn't appear to be serious, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him sit out a game or two as a precautionary measure. Look for Eduardo Nunez to see extra action in his stead if he's forced to miss any time.
May 6 - 9:35 PM

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Angels are one of many teams that have legitimate interest in signing Tim Lincecum.

Lincecum proved his health by all accounts during his showcase on Friday, and the Angels have been slammed with injuries in their rotation, so there seems to be a solid fit. The right-hander also prefers to pitch on the West Coast.
May 6 - 9:33 PM

Carlos Martinez was forced to leave Friday's start against the Pirates with an apparent injury.

Martinez looked uncomfortable for much of the fourth inning before he was finally lifted for Tyler Lyons. It's unclear exactly what the injury is, but it may have been an oblique issue. The Cardinals should have an update on his status soon.
May 6 - 9:30 PM

Taijuan Walker was forced to leave Friday's start against the Astros due to spasms on the left side of his neck.

Before departing after two innings, he allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits, both of which were home runs. The Mariners should provide an update on his status shortly. At this point, his next start could be in jeopardy.
May 6 - 9:25 PM

Angels transferred LHP Andrew Heaney to the 60-day disabled list.

This was done merely as a procedural move to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Javy Guerra. Heaney, like teammate Garrett Richrds, was dealt some difficult news on Friday when he found out that his UCL is compromised and may require Tommy John surgery. Heaney is expected to try to rehab the injury first as opposed to going under the knife, but will still be sidelined until around mid-season.
May 6 - 9:22 PM

Angels optioned OF Rafael Ortega to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 24-year-old got an opportunity to play with Daniel Nava on the disabled list, and responded well hitting .294/345/.294 with four RBI and two stolen bases in 56 plate appearances. He should get another opportunity with the big league club the next time injury strikes.
