Jason Heyward hit a game-tying homer in the ninth inning Wednesday as the Cardinals beat the Diamondbacks 4-3.

The Cardinals went on to win on a game-ending error from catcher Jordan Pacheco in the ninth. Heyward's homer was his third in 10 games and fifth overall. He's had a miserable season, which is why he was batting eighth against a right-hander tonight, but he's still playing quite a bit better now than he did in April.

Brad Ziegler took a blown save and a loss after giving up two runs -- one earned -- in the ninth Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Ziegler blew the save immediately, giving up a leadoff homer to Jason Heyward in the ninth. After that came a single, a groundout, an intentional walk, a walk and then what looked like an inning-ending double play ball. It turned out to be the game-winner for the Cardinals since a sliding Peter Bourjos hit catcher Jordan Pacheco's leg as he was making the home-to-first relay, sending the throw into right field. Ziegler should hang on to closing duties for now. It was his first blown save in three tries since he replaced Addison Reed.

Mark Trumbo hit his eighth homer and walked twice versus the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Trumbo hit two homers in the series against the Cardinals, one of several potential suitors for his services this summer. It wouldn't have seemed like a fit a day ago, but with Matt Adams (quad) out for a few months and perhaps the rest of the season, a power-hitting first baseman, one better than Mark Reynolds, might be a need for St. Louis.

Tuffy Gosewisch will have an MRI taken of his left knee Thursday.

Gosewisch left Wednesday's game with a jammed left knee, and the Diamondbacks want to know the extent of the injury before developing a gameplan. Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said the club could make a decision about a possible disabled list stint by Friday.

Max Scherzer pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 13 as the Nationals beat the Cubs 3-0 on Wednesday.

It's Scherzer's fifth career start with at least 13 strikeouts and first with the Nationals. He's won five straight starts since opening the season 1-3, and he has a 1.51 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP overall. He might have enough of a head start on Clayton Kershaw to qualify a the NL Cy Young favorite, though we'd still take Kershaw for the rest of the season.
May 27 - 11:24 PM

Jon Lester fanned 10 Nationals on Wednesday, but he still lost after giving up two runs -- one earned -- in seven innings.

Lester was outdueled by the one starter more sought-after last winter, Max Scherzer. It's his first loss since April 19, when his ERA stood at 6.89. He's turned in seven straight quality starts since that point.
May 27 - 11:20 PM

Ian Desmond had three hits, two of them doubles, Wednesday against the Cubs.

Desmond has a 12-game hitting streak going, though this is his first three-hit game since April 18. He's now hitting .257 and slugging .406. It's the first time his slugging has been up over .400 in a month.
May 27 - 11:19 PM

Bryce Harper homered and walked twice Wednesday against the Cubs.

He struck out in his other two plate appearances, so it was all three-true outcomes tonight. For the year, he has 18 homers, 42 walks and 46 strikeouts in 200 plate appearances.
