Knuckleballer Steven Wright yielded two runs in seven innings and struck out eight in a win the White Sox on Thursday.

Wright should have a chance to sink or swim as a starter these next couple of months. There's little reason to be excited about him, but it'd be a nice lift for the Red Sox if he shows he can be a cheap fourth starter going forward.

Chris Sale was lit up by the Red Sox on Thursday, surrendering seven runs and 12 hits in five innings.

That's the most hits he's even given up in a start. It follows an outing just 11 days ago in which he gave up 11 hits. Still, we wouldn't expect that this is the start of a trend for Sale. He still struck out seven and didn't give up any homers tonight.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that rival executives view the Yankees as the favorite to land Craig Kimbrel from the Padres.

The Yankees are in the market for both rotation and bullpen help. Kimbrel would join Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller to form perhaps the finest late-inning trio in all of baseball. The Padres are currently listening to offers on many of their players and expected to make big moves before Friday's deadline.

Despite facing Chris Sale, David Ortiz went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a walk Thursday against the White Sox.

All three hits came off Sale. Ortiz has had more success lately, but even so, he entered the game with a .162/.182/.276 line against left-handers this season. His overall average is up to .247, which is the highest it's been since early May.

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that the eight-player trade between the Rangers and Phillies involving Cole Hamels is complete, but won't be announced until Friday.

The deal had officially been approved by Major League baseball and will get completed, it just won't become official until Friday. Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman will be heading to the Rangers in exchange for Matt Harrison and five prospects: Jorge Alfaro, Jake Thompson, Nck Williams, Alec Asher and Jerad Eickhoff.

Domonic Brown went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Thursday as the Phillies topped the Braves 4-1.

With Ben Revere likely exiting, the door is open for Brown to get fairly regular playing time the rest of the way, should he show anything to justify it. He has gone 12-for-28 with three extra-base hits since July 20. It's something to build on.
Jul 30 - 10:48 PM

Aaron Harang won in his return from the DL after allowing one run and nine hits over five innings against the Braves.

The Phillies had lost Harang's last nine starts before he landed on the DL. The Braves had lost Shelby Miller's last seven starts. So, something had to give tonight. It turned out to be the Phillies' streak. Harang wasn't exactly dominant, but then, he's Aaron Harang. He seems like a poor bet in NL-only leagues the rest of the way.
Jul 30 - 10:46 PM

Shelby Miller was tagged for four runs and 11 hits in six innings Thursday in a loss to the Phillies.

This makes six straight losses for Miller. The Braves have lost each of his last eight starts, though that's more because they've scored a total of nine runs in those eight games than anything Miller has done wrong. He's not pitching quite as well as he did during the first three months, but he's not exactly struggling, either.
