Brian McCann is not in Yankees starting lineup on Saturday.
It has become commonplace for Yankees manager Joe Girardi to rest McCann on Saturday when the Yankees play an afternoon game following a night game. Friday night's hero will step aside and John Murphy will work behind the plate for the Bombers and bat seventh on Saturday.
Red Sox optioned RHP Noe Ramirez to Triple-A Pawtucket.
It was a very short-lived stay for Ramirez on the big league roster, as he allowed four runs (two earned) in his lone inning of work on Friday, his first day with the team. He should get another opportunity at some point this summer.
Red Sox recalled RHP Steven Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket.
The 30-year-old knuckleballer owns a 4.15 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 24/13 K/BB ratio over 43 1/3 innings with the big league club this season. He'll function in long relief.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Saturday that Victor Martinez is not considered an option to play first base in the wake of the Miguel Cabrera injury.
The Tigers are left scrambling at first base after losing their best hitter for the next six weeks, but Ausmus said he was concerned about trusting Martinez there for an extended period of time. It sounds as though they'll roll with a combination of Alex Avila, Andrew Romine and Jefry Marte for the time being.
Miguel Cabrera is expected to be sidelined for six weeks with a grade 3 left calf strain.
The Tigers had hoped that he would be ready to return shortly after the All-Star break, but it appears that the All-Star slugger will be on the shelf until late August. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers look to acquire a bat to replace Cabrera in the lineup, or if his untimely injury will force Dave Dombrowski to become a seller at the trade deadline.
Alex Avila is starting at first base for the Tigers on Saturday in place of the injured Miguel Cabrera.
Avila will bat fifth for the Tigers on Saturday. It isn't quite clear yet how the Tigers plan to manage the first base position in Cabrera's absence. Jefry Marte was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, but they may not want to throw him right in against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
Jose Iglesias is not in the Tigers starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.
It's nothing more than a day of rest for the slick-fielding shortstop. Josh Wilson will draw a rare start in his place and bat eighth against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
Tigers purchased the contract of INF Jefry Marte from Triple-A Toledo.
The 24-year-old has played primarily at third base for the Mud Hens this season, though he has appeared in a few contests at first base in the past few seasons. It's unclear exactly how he'll be utilized, but there's a good chance his bat is in the lineup most nights while Miguel Cabrera is sidelined. Marte was slashing .271/.337/.497 with 13 homers and 55 RBI in 77 games at Triple-A.
