The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett considers free agent DT Nick Fairley a "long shot" to return to the Lions.

27-year-old Fairley presumably wore out his welcome due to large weight fluctuations and inconsistent on-field performance. He's still going to generate a ton of interest on the open market. When on his game, Fairley is very difficult to block, particularly when operating as a pass rusher.

Calvin Johnson will not need offseason surgery.

It's good news for Megatron, who underwent finger and ankle surgery last offseason. Turning 30 next September, Johnson should have at least 1-2 year left of top-end wide receiver play. "Feeling good," Johnson said on Saturday. "Coming along. I'm not 100 (percent) yet, but that's what the offseason's for, to get right. So reload and get ready for next year."

The Detroit Free Press confirms free agent DT Ndamukong Suh is "angling" to become the NFL's highest paid defensive player.

He won't be giving any hometown discounts to Detroit, which already has exorbitant cap costs tied up in Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Beat writer Dave Birkett does believe Suh will ultimately re-sign with the Lions. An alternative would be to re-sign Nick Fairley and C.J. Mosley on the cheap and make them bookend starters. Fairley and Mosley's contracts are up, as well.

Cardinals promoted OLBs coach James Bettcher to defensive coordinator.

This has been the expected move for a couple weeks now following Todd Bowles' departure to become the Jets' coach. Bettcher has only been a coach at the NFL level since 2012 when he entered the league with the Colts. Prior to that, he was the special teams coordinator at New Hampshire. Bruce Arians brought Bettcher to Arizona with him. Bettcher will get plenty of help.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the NFL is investigating the Falcons for piping artificial crowd noise into their stadium the past two seasons.

The Falcons allegedly were pumping the noise through the Georgia Dome speakers when the opposing offense was huddling up trying to call its play. Atlanta could be looking at a stiff fine and loss of a draft pick if found guilty.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Jets and Bills will pursue CB Darrelle Revis if he reaches free agency this offseason.

That's a big "if", as there have been recent reports of the Patriots seriously considering picking up Revis' $20 million team option for 2015. He had an excellent first season in New England, playing at an All-Pro level and grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 4 cover corner. The Jets and Bills' connections are easy. Revis became a star in New York under new Bills coach Rex Ryan.

Giants matriarch Ann Mara passed away at the age of 85 early Sunday morning.

Mara slipped at her home during a recent ice storm on January 18 and suffered a head injury that eventually took her life Sunday morning. She was the wife of former Giants co-owner Wellington Mara, who passed in 2005, and the mother of current Giants president and CEO John Mara. Ann was often dubbed the "First Lady of Football." The Maras have owned the Giants since their inception.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Seahawks have offered Marshawn Lynch "a huge contract extension that would keep him in a Seahawks uniform for years to come."

It's believed the deal would make Lynch the highest-paid running back in terms of annual average not named Adrian Peterson. It's a big swing of events after it's been rumored for the better part of a calendar year now that 2014 could be Lynch's final season in Seattle due to age, inflated salary, and edginess. Per RapSheet, the new deal would pay Lynch around $10 million next season.
