Nate Jones underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday.

Jones had been out since the first week of the season because of a lower back injury and apparently tore his UCL while rehabbing. The 28-year-old right-handed reliever will be sidelined for the majority of 2015.

Chris Davis (flu) is out again Wednesday.

Davis was sent home early on Tuesday with flu-like symptoms and is still battling the illness. Steve Pearce is starting at first base Wednesday night versus the Angels.

Dodgers optioned 2B Darwin Barney to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Barney was acquired from the Cubs earlier this week for pitcher Jonathan Martinez, but the 28-year-old infielder is going to get some time in the minors before joining Los Angeles' active roster. Barney is an elite defender at second base, but he owns a .244/.290/.335 career slash line at the major league level.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Astros are looking to trade Chris Carter.

Carter has 21 home runs in 93 games this season but is also sporting a weak .212 batting average and .291 on-base percentage. The 27-year-old will be arbitration-eligible for the first time heading into 2015 and is under contractual control through 2018, so Houston will want something fairly significant in return.

Zack Wheeler held the Phillies to two runs over 6 2/3 innings in an 11-2 win Wednesday.

He surrendered seven hits, walked two and struck out four, throwing 112 pitches on the day. It's been and up-and-down season for Wheeler, but he's been terrific of late with a 1.63 ERA over his last six outings. The young right-hander will look to keep it going next week versus the Nationals on the road.
Jul 30 - 4:10 PM

Lucas Duda singled in a run and launched a two-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Phillies.

That gives Duda seven longballs this month and five over his last eight games. The 28-year-old is hitting just .262 for the season, but it's come along with a .358 OBP, 19 homers and 60 RBI. He's currently on pace for a 29-homer, 90-RBI campaign.
Jul 30 - 4:06 PM

Tanner Roark delivered seven innings of one-run ball Wednesday in the Nationals' 4-3 defeat of the Marlins.

It was another terrific outing from the 27-year-old right-hander, who is now 11-6 on the season with a 2.74 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. Roark allowed only three Miami hits and two walks while striking out seven. Drew Storen nearly blew it in the ninth inning -- yielding two runs on a walk and three hits -- but he managed to close it out for his first save of the season. Roark will face the Orioles at home next.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Mariners are "out" on Marlon Byrd.

Stark says there are "still some legs to rumblings" that the Yankees could go after Byrd, but they're wary of the outfielder's 2016 vesting option. The Royals had also previously been reported as a possible landing spot but no longer appear in the running. The market for the veteran outfield looks to be drying up.
