Rays catching prospect Justin O'Conner cranked three hits Tuesday in a win for Double-A Montgomery.

He also scored three runs, doubling for the third time in as many games. O'Conner has struggled offensively, hitting .199 this season with 50 strikeouts in only 136 at-bats. Fortunately, he's been a stud behind the plate, throwing out 35 percent of would-be base stealers. Tampa Bay used its first-round pick on O'Conner back in 2010.

Angels designated RHP Chad Smith for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Smith was just acquired from the A's earlier this month after they had designated him for assignment.

Erik Cordier has cleared waivers.

He has three days to decide whether to accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Sacramento. Cordier holds a 1.50 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 12 frames for Sacramento this season.

Drew Pomeranz (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session on Thursday.

Pomeranz played catch a few days after being placed on the disabled list with a sore shoulder and is now ready for mound work, so it's safe to say the cortisone injection he received has worked. The left-hander could be ready for a rehab assignment before long.
May 27 - 1:53 PM

A.J. Griffin (elbow) will throw a simulated game on Thursday.

Griffin's recovery from Tommy John surgery suffered a minor setback when he was shut down for a bit with shoulder soreness, but he's now getting back on track. The right-hander could begin a rehab assignment soon.

Yankees pitching prospect Luis Severino tied a career-high with nine strikeouts Tuesday in a win for Double-A Trenton.

Severino allowed three hits, two walks and two runs over five innings. The victory was his first since April 19, ending a five-start winless streak. Severino is now third in the Eastern League in strikeouts (48) and ninth in WHIP (1.11). With only 14 Double-A starts on his resume, the 21-year-old could use a little more seasoning before his next promotion.

Justin Verlander (triceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.

The Tigers wanted to make sure he felt fine after Tuesday's simulated game, and it appears it's all systems go. Verlander will throw 80-85 pitches in the outing and whether he makes an additional rehab start will depend "on how the first one goes," according to manager Brad Ausmus. The righty could be activated as soon as June 5 if he pitches and feels well on Sunday.

Orioles activated INF Ryan Flaherty from the 15-day disabled list.

Flaherty is playing second base and hitting seventh for the O's Wednesday. He's battled a groin issue for over a month -- an injury that caused two DL stints -- but is convinced he's over it now.
