Sean Doolittle gave up three runs in the ninth inning while pitching in a non-save situation versus the Brewers on Wednesday.

Luckily he had a six-run lead when he entered the game. The Nationals have had a terrible time finding a reliable closer this year and today's game isn't going to make them feel any better. Doolittle did manage to strike out three batters in the inning, but that is small consolation considering he allowed a walk, a single, a double, a two-run homer and a wild pitch all in one inning of work. The bad outing boosted his ERA from 3.33 up to 4.26 in 25 1/3 innings.

Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the Mariners "have shown interest" in Sonny Gray.

The Yankees were reported to be making progress toward a potential deal for Gray and first baseman Yonder Alonso on Tuesday night, but nothing has come of that as of yet. Along with the Mariners and Yankees, the Nationals (and presumably a number of other clubs) are also interested in potentially acquiring the right-hander.

Rockies transferred LHP Tyler Anderson to the 60-day disabled list.

Anderson underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee near the end of June. The procedure was expected to require a recovery period in the vicinity of four weeks. With this transfer to the 60-day disabled list, Anderson will not be eligible to rejoin the team until late August.

Domingo Santana went 2-for-5 with a solo home run during a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday.

He took starter Gio Gonzalez over the left field wall in the first inning. Santana, who turns 25 years old next week, has taken a big step forward at the plate this season. He has a .292 batting average with 17 home runs, 55 RBI and 58 runs scored through 396 plate appearances. The big guy has also stolen nine bases in 12 attempts after swiping only two bags a year ago.

Phillies acquired RHP Alejandro Requena, RHP J.D. Hammer and INF Jose Gomez from the Rockies for RHP Pat Neshek.

Pitching at Low-A Asheville this season, Requena held a 2.85 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 97/25 K/BB ratio over the course of 117 innings (19 starts). Just 20 years old, he does not figure to see his major league debut for another season or so.

Lewis Brinson cracked his first major league home run in Wednesday's loss to the Nationals.

He went deep off closer Sean Doolittle with a runner aboard in the ninth inning. He went 1-for-3 with a walk after being recalled from Triple-A earlier in the day. He struggled badly in his first stint in the majors last month, but after his demotion he went back to mashing in the minors to earn another shot. The 23-year-old elite prospect was batting .345 with 10 homers and 11 steals in 68 minor league games this year.

Phillies acquired RHP J.D. Hammer, RHP Alejandro Requena and INF Jose Gomez from the Rockies for RHP Pat Neshek.

Splitting time between Low- and High-A in the Rockies system this season, Hammer was pitching to a 2.36 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 65/14 K/BB ratio across 42 innings. The 23-year-old right-hander remains a fair ways out from making his major league debut.

Jimmy Nelson gave up two runs and punched out 10 batters in seven innings and took a no-decision in Wednesday's loss to the Nationals.

He ran off six scoreless innings before allowing a solo home run to Daniel Murphy in the seventh. He went back out for the eighth and walked the leadoff batter before being relieved. That runner would come around to score against the bullpen but was charged to Nelson. This was the fifth time this year that Nelson has recorded double-figure strikeouts in a ballgame. He is 8-5 with a 3.38 ERA after 21 starts. He has 142 strikeouts against only 31 walks in 127 2/3 innings.
