Bears placed WR Marquess Wilson (broken collarbone) on injured reserve/designated to return.

Wilson will be eligible to return in Week 10, as the Bears are on bye in Week 9. That would be a best-case scenario after Wilson was given a 12-14 week timeline upon going down on August 4. Wilson had been shaping up as an intriguing sleeper, but is unlikely to come into any re-draft value after the Bears signed Santonio Holmes to take his place behind Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall. Unless Holmes proves to have nothing left, Wilson will be returning as the No. 4 receiver.

Fourth-round rookie Devonta Freeman remains the No. 4 back on the Falcons' "unofficial" Week 1 depth chart.

Freeman rushed 32 times for 134 yards (4.18 YPC) and a touchdown in the preseason, adding 11 catches for an additional 146 yards. He graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 1 running back. In other words, his depth-chart placement is likely ceremonial. Jacquizz Rodgers has firmly established he's a poor NFL backup, while Antone Smith is a 29-year-old (this month) change-of-pace back. Freeman is the most sensible and highest-upside handcuff for Steven Jackson.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Cowboys are considering free agent DE Michael Sam for their practice squad.

Specifically, they are "doing research and due diligence" into the idea. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Sam "will be a Cowboy" as long as his physical goes well. As a 4-3 defense in desperate need of edge rushers, the Cowboys would be an excellent landing spot for Sam after he was a victim of the numbers game along the Rams' loaded line. It's almost beyond belief that Sam has yet to find a practice-squad spot after notching three preseason sacks in four games for the Rams.

Lions re-signed DE Darryl Tapp.

Tapp was released at final cuts, but returns as a deep reserve/special teamer after the Lions placed rookie SLB Kyle Van Noy on injured reserve/designated to return.

Lions placed SLB Kyle Van Noy (abdominal surgery) on injured reserve/designated to return.

Van Noy's timeline has never been publicly established, but the Detroit Free Press estimated he'd miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing "core muscle surgery" last week. That would mean he should be ready to rock when first eligible to return in Week 10. The Lions are on bye in Week 9. The Lions will be rolling with Tahir Whitehead after spending the No. 40 overall pick on Van Noy.

Kyle Orton's deal with the Bills is for two years and $11 million.

It includes a $3 million signing bonus, while the second year is voidable. It's a huge chunk of change for a "backup," one that suggests the Bills fully expect Orton to make starts this season. E.J. Manuel is going to have to show something in September to keep his starting gig. If/when Orton takes over, he'll be asked to manage games as the Bills employ one of the league's run-heaviest offenses.

Jets DB Antonio Allen will start at cornerback in Week 1.

It means Dee Milliner (high-ankle sprain) will be sitting. Allen has been an NFL cornerback all of three weeks, but is the Jets' best option opposite fourth-year UDFA Darrin Walls. Ineffective former first-rounder Kyle Wilson will remain in the slot. In theory, the Jets would be a good team to spot start against, but the Raiders will be trotting out second-rounder Derek Carr, whose starting experience is limited to one preseason game. The Jets desperately need Milliner back for Week 2.
Sep 2 - 4:04 PM

Browns signed G/T Vinston Painter.

He was signed off the Broncos' practice squad. The No. 173 pick of last year's draft, Painter has yet to make a regular-season appearance. He's just a depth signing, one the Browns could be hoping to eventually store on their own practice squad.
