Rich Hill (finger) is scheduled to throw his next bullpen session on Wednesday.

Hill has been throwing with a protective cover on his finger and it's unclear whether he has made enough progress to shed it. The southpaw hasn't pitched since July 17, but the A's remain hopeful he'll be able to make a start before the end of the team's current road trip. It's worth noting that the road trip runs right through the August 1 non-waiver trade deadline.

Brett Eibner went 0-for-4 on Monday and is 0-for-15 since the All-Star break.

Eibner got off to a nice start for the Royals, hitting .304/.361/.571 in his first 56 at-bats of the year. He's not contributing these last 10 days, though, and he's probably going to be sent down when Lorenzo Cain comes off the DL.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said after Monday's game that Coco Crisp (neck) might be ready to play Tuesday.

Crisp has missed back-to-back games due to neck soreness, but he was able to take batting practice Monday. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Drew Pomeranz pitched well but took a loss Monday, holding the Tigers to two runs over six frames while striking out seven.

Pomeranz was in the midst of a gem before Jose Iglesias took him over the Green Monster with a two-run shot in the sixth inning. He gave up just four hits and walk two on the night to go along with his seven punchouts. It was obviously a major step forward after Pomeranz was knocked around in his first outing for Boston. He'll get the Angels over the weekend.

Adrian Beltre went 4-for-5 with two homers, the second of which was a walkoff blast off Ryan Madson in the bottom of the ninth, in the Rangers' 7-6 defeat of the A's on Monday.

Beltre hit a solo homer off John Axford in the seventh and then the two-run blast to win it next time up. It was his 29th career two-homer game and second of this year. He's four homers away from his 12th career 20-homer season (he also finished with 19 twice).

Joe Smith was unavailable Monday because his back tightened up.

Some speculated about a trade when Smith didn't pitch in the seventh inning Monday, but he's not going anywhere yet. Fortunately, the back issue appears to be minor and he should be good to go Tuesday.

Francisco Rodriguez retired all four batters he faced to record his 28th save of the season in Monday's win over the Red Sox.

The Tigers turned to K-Rod with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, and he got Mookie Betts to ground into a fielder's choice. The closer then retired the Red Sox 1-2-3 in the ninth. K-Rod has mostly been excellent since a couple rough outings in April.

Daniel Mengden was lifted after allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings Monday in a no-decision against the Rangers.

Mengden doesn't have a single quality start in five tries this month; he's given up 23 earned runs over 23 innings. It's time for him to head back to Triple-A, though whether that happens could hinge on Rich Hill's status. One thing is for sure: Jesse Hahn is more deserving of the rotation spot right now (though there might be room for both).
