Former 49ers WR P.J. Fleck recently resigned as Northern Illinois' offensive coordinator, and it's believed he will join Greg Schiano's coaching staff with the Buccaneers.

Fleck was Schiano's receivers coach at Rutgers in 2011. He was on "the job" at Northern Illinois for just one day, and since NIU is his alma mater, it's a good bet he wouldn't have spurned them without a significant opportunity. Only 31 years old, Fleck spent a couple of years with the Niners in the mid-2000s.

Bills re-signed K Rian Lindell.

Terms weren't disclosed, but Lindell is 35 and missed eight games in 2011 due to injury. While we can't imagine the Bills committed much, Lindell will be a good bet to beat out Brandon Coutu to keep his job in 2012. Buffalo's offense will have to take a major surge to get Lindell back on the fantasy radar.

Free agent Jermichael Finley confirmed at the Super Bowl Friday that he and the Packers have made no headway on a new contract.

"Hey, it's the NFL," he said. "With business right now, I don't even know what's going on. ... You just have to play that (waiting) game. It's the Green Bay way." The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel expects Finley's camp to argue that he's a wideout if the Packers slap him with the franchise tag. The receiver tag will be worth roughly $9.5 million. The tight end tag is $5.5 million.

Saints FB Jed Collins finished the 2011 season as Pro Football Focus' top-rated lead blocker in the league.

Collins is best known to fantasy leaguers for vulturing four short-yardage touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving) from Mark Ingram et al, but he was a battering ram for New Orleans. The Saints' team yards-per-carry average leaped from 4.0 (22nd in the NFL) in 2010 to 4.9 (fourth) in 2011. In terms of all-around performance, Pro Football Focus rated only Vonta Leach higher among fullbacks. Leach got an All-Pro nod. Collins got nada.

According to Profootballtalk.com, the Redskins gave former Broncos CB Perrish Cox a tryout in early November.

It was Cox's only known tryout of the season. The NFL has surprisingly handed down no discipline to Cox after he was arrested in December 2010 for (allegedly) raping and impregnating a woman who had passed out at a party. Cox's DNA was found in and on the woman, and he was charged with a double felony. Cox has starting-caliber NFL ability, but he's quite the "turd."

STATS Inc. charged 49ers LT Joe Staley with six sacks allowed, but no holding penalties in 16 starts in 2011.

The Niners also averaged 5.2 yards on run plays off left tackle, the NFL's seventh best mark. Quietly, it was Staley's first healthy season since 2008, as he missed 14 games combined during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. He earned his first career Pro Bowl. There was speculation that the 49ers might eventually move Joe Staley to right tackle after they drafted Anthony Davis in 2010, but it's not happening. Staley will return on the blind side in 2012.

The Vikings are expected to demote FS Jamarca Sanford into a special teams-only role in 2012.

Sanford "earned" the opportunity to start in 2011 after beating out Tyrell Johnson in camp, but he flopped in the secondary. Per ESPN 1500's Tom Pelissero, Sanford allowed 20 of the 31 passes thrown at him to be completed (64.5 percent) for 344 yards and eight touchdowns. He also missed too many open-field tackles. Per Pelissero, Sanford "confirmed he's just a special teamer."

Vikings DE Everson Griffin played only 25.3 percent of the team's 2011 defensive snaps, but finished fourth on the team in sacks (4.0) and racked up 14 quarterback pressures.

Beat writer Tom Pelissero is adamant Griffen deserves more playing time, but the Vikings haven't found creative ways to do it. Per Pelissero, who charted all of Minnesota's 2011 defensive snaps, Griffen displayed "a variety of pass-rush moves from both end spots" and was "OK in the run game, too." Highly athletic, Griffen also finished second on the Vikings with 18 special teams tackles.
