Arismendy Alcantara went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored as the Cubs were trampled by the Padres 13-3 on Thursday.

Alcantara, who has split his time between second base and center field thus far, enjoyed his fourth multi-hit game out of only 11 thus far to begin his major league career. The talented 22-year-old is slashing .277/.327/.532 with two home runs, seven RBI, and four stolen bases in 52 plate appearances.

Seth Smith logged three hits in four trips to the plate in Thursday's routing of the Cubs.

Smith singled and scored in the first, doubled and was stranded in the third, then singled in a run in the sixth and later came around to score on another single. With the Padres up by a substantial amount in the seventh, journeyman Jeff Francoeur pinch-hit for Smith with lefty reliever James Russell on the hill. Smith continues to enjoy a breakout season, slashing .293/.390/.514 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI.

Rene Rivera had a great night at the dish, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run and a two-run single in Thursday's win against the Cubs.

Rivera entered the night having logged just one hit in his last 17 plate appearances, so he busted out of the slump in a big way. He took Edwin Jackson deep for a solo shot in the fifth inning, then singled to right to drive in two in the sixth. Rivera has done well in the power department, but hasn't done much else, slashing .228/.286/.436 with seven home runs and 26 RBI on the season.

Blue Jays sent LHP Brad Mills outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

Mills had been designated for assignment on Wednesday. The left-hander has the option to choose free agency rather than accept the assignment.

Tyson Ross was masterful on Thursday, allowing just one run in six innings in a win as the Padres routed the Cubs.

With 11 punch-outs, Ross joined the double-digit strikeout club for the first time this season and for just the second time in his career. The right-hander relented the one run when Luis Valbuena singled in Anthony Rizzo in the fourth. Overall, Ross allowed five hits and walked one. Now with a 2.65 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and a 143/47 K/BB ratio, the All-Star will take on the Cardinals at home in his next start.

ESPN's Jim Bowden reports that the Yankees are in talks with the Rockies regarding Jorge De La Rosa.

It's clear that the Bombers aren't done adding pitching after the additions of Brandon McCarthy and Chris Capuano, as Bowden has linked them to Ian Kennedy and now to De La Rosa. The Rockies left-hander has a pedestrian 4.19 ERA this season but boasts a 1.78 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in three July starts.

Adam Eaton went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run single as the White Sox defeated the Twins 5-2 on Thursday.

Eaton doubled and scored the first run for the White Sox in the third inning, then plated two with a single to cap off a three-run fourth inning. The outfielder hasn't done much in the power department, but otherwise has a decent .286/.358/.388 slash line with one home run, 27 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. Eaton recently admitted to playing through a broken right middle finger, so don't expect the power to appear anytime soon.

X-rays on Phil Hughes' right shin came back negative.

Hughes was forced from Thursday's outing in the fourth inning when he took an Adam Dunn comebacker off the shin. He'll undoubtedly be sore but the Twins are hopeful that he'll be ready for his next start.
