Max Scherzer pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 13 as the Nationals beat the Cubs 3-0 on Wednesday.

It's Scherzer's fifth career start with at least 13 strikeouts and first with the Nationals. He's won five straight starts since opening the season 1-3, and he has a 1.51 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP overall. He might have enough of a head start on Clayton Kershaw to qualify a the NL Cy Young favorite, though we'd still take Kershaw for the rest of the season.

Jon Lester fanned 10 Nationals on Wednesday, but he still lost after giving up two runs -- one earned -- in seven innings.

Lester was outdueled by the one starter more sought-after last winter, Max Scherzer. It's his first loss since April 19, when his ERA stood at 6.89. He's turned in seven straight quality starts since that point.

Ian Desmond had three hits, two of them doubles, Wednesday against the Cubs.

Desmond has a 12-game hitting streak going, though this is his first three-hit game since April 18. He's now hitting .257 and slugging .406. It's the first time his slugging has been up over .400 in a month.

Bryce Harper homered and walked twice Wednesday against the Cubs.

He struck out in his other two plate appearances, so it was all three-true outcomes tonight. For the year, he has 18 homers, 42 walks and 46 strikeouts in 200 plate appearances.

Batting leadoff for the second time this season, Chris Coghlan struck out all three times he was up Wednesday before being removed for a pinch-hitter.

Manager Joe Maddon got in his head to drop Dexter Fowler into the cleanup spot tonight, putting Coghlan and his .290 OBP atop the order. Since it didn't work out, there's a good chance Coghlan will go right back to batting seventh on Friday.

Tuffy Gosewisch left Wednesday's game against the Cardinals with a jammed left knee.

Gosewisch likely jammed the knee stretching to touch first base while trying to beat out a throw in the sixth inning. A jammed knee doesn't sound terribly serious, but the Diamondbacks should give a clearer outlook for the backstop by Thursday. Jordan Pacheco will likely fill in at catcher if Gosewisch is forced to miss time.
May 27 - 11:04 PM

Tuffy Gosewisch left Wednesday's game against the Cardinals with an apparent knee injury.

Gosewisch appeared to hurt his left knee trying to beat out a throw to first base. He stayed on the ground beyond first base for a while before leaving with a trainer. Jordan Pacheco replaced Gosewisch, who was 0-for-3 in the game, behind the dish.

Matt Adams is expected to miss 3-4 months with a strained right quad, the team announced Wednesday.

It's still unclear whether he'll require surgery, but either way his season is officially in jeopardy. Mark Reynolds moves into an everyday role with the injury, and the NL Central-leading Cardinals may be forced to look outside the organization for help at some point.
