Blue Jays signed OF Dayan Viciedo to a minor league contract.

The deal will pay Viciedo $2.5 million if he makes the team out of spring. Viciedo can be a useful player against left-handed pitching, but his days as a viable everyday starting outfielder have gone. Viciedo hit 21 homers last season, so at the very least he can provide some additional pop for the Jays.

A source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the Blue Jays and OF Dayan Viciedo have agreed on a minor league deal.

No terms were known. Viciedo was cut loose by the White Sox but still has some value as a right-handed power hitter. The 25-year-old hit 21 homers in 523 at-bats this past season. With Michael Saunders out for a period of time to start the year, he could see time as a starter with the Jays in the early going if he breaks camp with the club.

Carlos Gonzalez (knee) will begin running the bases next week.

CarGo is recovering from surgery to repair the patella tendon in his left knee last August. The outfielder won't be in the lineup when Cactus League games begin on Wednesday, but he doesn't appear to be too far away from game action. Assuming things go well, Gonzalez will be in the Rockies' lineup on Opening Day.

Troy Tulowitzki (hip) will run the bases next week.

Tulo is recovering from surgery to repair his torn left hip labrum, and the Rockies are taking it slow with their superstar as he returns to action. Tulowitzki has already been taking infield practice this spring, another good sign. Assuming his progress continues, Tulo should be ready to roll for Opening Day.

Jonathan Pettibone (shoulder) said he's probably a few weeks away from throwing to live hitters in batting practice.

Pettibone is recovering from shoulder surgery in June, and as such he remains a few weeks behind his peers. Pettibone, 24, threw just nine innings this past season, but he had a 4.04 ERA in 18 starts for the Phillies in 2013. Given how weak the back end of the Phillies rotation appears, the right-hander could find his way into the rotation once healthy.

Matt Wieters (elbow) is set to start at catcher for Sunday's intrasquad game.

It will be the first time Wieters has been behind the dish since last May. While he'll serve as the backstop, Wieters still won't be allowed to throw at 100 percent until March 17. He's slated to catch two innings in Sunday's game. Everything is trending toward the 28-year-old being ready for Opening Day.

Josh Hamilton's potential suspension for drug use would begin at the start of the season, a source tells Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.

That's meaningful because Hamilton is also in the process of recovering from shoulder surgery, so the recovery and his suspension could coincide. In fact, there's a chance that Hamilton could actually end up serving his entire suspension, whatever it may be, while rehabbing. Any decision on a potential suspension isn't expected anytime soon, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

Luis Cruz was forced to take Saturday off from throwing due to swelling in his pitching hand.

Cruz sustained the injury on Friday when he jammed his hand trying to field a ground ball during pitcher's fielding practice. He's hopeful that he'll be able to play catch on Sunday and resume mound work shortly after.
