FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal writes that "the odds remain heavily against" a trade of Justin Verlander.

Rosenthal adds that a source with knowledge of the Tigers' thinking considers it a "low probability" that Verlander is dealt. There are numerous obstacles to a trade, with Verlander's contract and ability to veto any deal among them. There's also the fact that he's 34 and not having a terribly good season. The Cubs, Brewers and Dodgers have been mentioned as possible landing spots for Verlander.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres are a "dark horse" to acquire Sonny Gray.

They'd certainly be an unconventional landing spot for Gray given that they're not contenders in 2017 and don't appear poised to contend soon. However, Rosenthal writes that the Padres "have shown steady interest in Gray, apparently viewing him as a possible fit in their long-term plan." The Braves are another non-contender that looks like a legitimate player for Gray. The Yankees, Dodgers and Cubs are also in the mix, while the Astros and Brewers, at this moment, "are not significantly involved" anymore, according to Rosenthal.

Brett Gardner scored the tying run in the ninth inning before hitting a walk-off homer in the 11th to give the Yankees a 6-5 win over the Rays on Thursday.

Gardner had a relatively quiet night before he stepped to the plate to lead off the ninth inning. In that at-bat, he slapped a triple into the left-center gap, eventually scoring the game-tying run later in the inning. He then stepped in to lead off the 11th inning and ripped a pitch over the right field wall to commence the celebration. The 33-year-old now has a career-high 18 homers to go with 46 RBI, 66 runs scored and 13 steals. He's batting .261/.353/.465 after Thursday's fireworks.

Alex Colome suffered a blown save against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing a run on two hits.

As blown saves go, this one was tough to swallow. Sure, Brett Gardner's leadoff triple put Colome in a bind, but it looked as though he was going to get out of it after retiring Clint Frazier and Aaron Judge while keeping Gardner at third. And when Gary Sanchez hit a seemingly harmless grounder toward the shortstop, it certainly seemed as though the game was over. But shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria assumed second baseman Tim Beckham would make the play, and Beckham did the same for Hechavarria, and in the end it was Colome left holding the bag. The blown save was his first in a month, and the 28-year-old still has a strong 3.66 ERA to go with his AL-best 29 saves. Thursday was simply a blip on the radar.

Corey Dickerson went 2-for-5 with a solo homer in a loss to the Yankees on Thursday.

Yankees reliever Chad Green threw a 95 mph fastball up in the zone that Dickerson caught up to, yanking it out to right for his 19th homer of the year. He'd been hitless in his previous four games, with the mini slump dropping his season line to .304/.348/.535 through Thursday's game. His 64 runs still rank among the league's best, and the 28-year-old has a shot at setting career highs in a number of offensive categories this year.

Gary Sanchez went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Thursday's win over the Rays.

Sanchez got hold of a Chris Archer offering in the third inning for his 15th homer of the year, and he also provided some small heroics with an RBI single in the ninth inning that tied the game and paved the way for Brett Gardner's walk-off homer in the 11th. The 24-year-old needed a good night after what's been a rough month -- Sanchez was hitting just .213/.259/.320 with one homer in July coming into the night. Perhaps Thursday's game can be a jumping off point for Sanchez.

Chris Archer punched out 10 while allowing three runs over six innings but settled for a no-decision Thursday against the Yankees.

Archer did what he could, turning in his sixth consecutive quality start, but his bullpen let him down, denying him his eighth win. In fact, in those six straight quality starts, the 28-year-old is just 1-2. Archer has deserved better than his 7-6 record overall, posting a 3.80 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 177/46 K/BB ratio over 22 starts; he ranks second in the American League in both innings pitched and strikeouts. Life doesn't get any easier for Archer and the Rays next week, when the right-hander squares off with the AL West-leading Astros on Tuesday.

Dusty Coleman went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Mets.

Coleman uncoiled for a three-run home run -- the first big league home run of his career -- in the fourth inning to give the Padres a 7-1 lead. The Mets would later crawl to within 7-5, but were unable to draw closer than that. This was just Coleman's third game with the Padres. He owned a .209/.280/.438 triple-slash with 14 homers and 11 steals at Triple-A prior to being called up at the beginning of the week.
