Robbie Grossman went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI as the Astros beat the Phillies 6-3 on Monday.

That Evan Gattis now seems set to spend more time in left field than at first base this spring isn't very good news for Grossman. He probably belongs in a bench role anyway, and he might get one, though it doesn't help his case that he has an option year left and Alex Presley doesn't.
Mar 5 - 4:31 PM

Mark Appel surrendered one run and three hits in two innings out of the pen Thursday versus the Phillies.

Appel struck out two and walked none. The first overall pick in the 2013 draft is not getting any consideration for a rotation spot this spring, but if he performs in the minors, he should be up sometime this summer.
Mar 5 - 4:28 PM

Luis Valbuena went 2-for-2 with a wind-aided homer Thursday versus the Philies.

The homer, which came off Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, was described by the Phillies' radio guys as looking like a routine flyball off the bat. Still, he'll take it. Valbuena appears set to serve as the Astros' third baseman against right-handed pitching, giving him value in AL-only leagues.
Mar 5 - 4:27 PM

Cliff Lee (elbow) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a pair of singles, in his spring debut Thursday against the Astros.

No radar gun reports from Lee's outing, but CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury said he "looked sharp" and he came out of it feeling fine. Since all of the reports have been good so far, his stock is on the way back up.
Mar 5 - 4:25 PM

Mike Minor (shoulder) is expected to see Dr. James Andrews early next week.

Minor was scratched from Sunday's start against the Astros due to tightness in his throwing shoulder and the Braves want him to get checked out. The southpaw dealt with shoulder issues last year en route to a disappointing 4.77 ERA, so this is a concerning development.
Mar 5 - 4:18 PM

Yoenis Cespedes (back) is scheduled to return to action Saturday against the Braves.

Cespedes was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to tightness in his lower back. The Tigers don't have him on their travel roster for Friday, but it's clearly not a major concern.
Mar 5 - 4:15 PM

Yunel Escobar was scratched from Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets due to general soreness.

The soreness is apparently due to the extra work he has been putting in with his transition to second base. He should be ready to go in a day or so.
Mar 5 - 4:11 PM

Carlos Martinez impressed in a win over the Marlins on Thursday, striking out three in two perfect innings.

Even after trading Shelby Miller, the Cardinals will have just one rotation spot for Martinez, Jaime Garcia or Marco Gonzales, assuming their top four stays healthy. The winner of the battle will be worth picking up in mixed leagues, but it's too early to make a call there. Martinez has excellent raw stuff and the most fantasy upside of the bunch.
