Rays activated LHP Jake McGee from the paternity leave list.

McGee has been away since Friday following the birth of his daughter. He'll resume his role as the Rays' primary closing option.
Jul 13 - 11:05 AM

Rays optioned RHP Jeremy Hellickson to Double-A Montgomery.

He'll start there on Monday, as the Rays wanted to keep him pitching over the All-Star break. Hellickson will rejoin the big league rotation soon.
Jul 13 - 11:03 AM

Astros third base prospect Rio Ruiz went 2-for-5 with two triples and one walk for High-A Lancaster.

Ruiz has been on fire in July, hitting .359/.435/.667 with five doubles, three triples, and one home run. Ruiz has the tools to hit for a high average, but there are questions regarding his future power potential. If his power fully develops, he could hit 20-plus home runs, but if it does not, he could struggle to hit 10 home runs in a season.

Gerrit Cole (lat) will throw a 20-25 pitch bullpen session on Thursday.

The Pirates are taking it one step at a time with the young right-hander, as they won't decide what next to do with Cole until after Thursday's side session. We do know that Cole will not return on July 20 when first eligible, but a timetable has yet to be mapped out. He's dealing with tightness in his right lat.

Marco Scutaro admitted that his back tightened up on him late during Saturday's game.

It's not unexpected, as Scutaro still isn't 100 percent and was playing in his first game of the season. He's essentially going to be day-to-day for the rest of the season, but the Giants are hoping he'll be able to gut it out without going back on the DL. "I know my back is not 100 percent," Scutaro said. "I'll just try to fight through it, day by day, and go from there."
Jul 13 - 10:59 AM

Rockies outfield prospect Raimel Tapia went 5-for-8 with two doubles and a stolen base for Low-A Asheville on Saturday, raising his season line to .333/.385/.463.

After a slow April, Tapia has hit .366/.419/.513 with 18 doubles, one triple, and five home runs since the beginning of May. Tapia has average power and is likely to end up in an outfield corner, but he has a balanced swing with an innate ability to square up pitches. He has the talent to hit .315-plus in the majors, but is unlikely to reach the the majors until 2017.
Jul 13 - 10:55 AM

Pirates activated LHP Francisco Liriano from the 15-day disabled list.

Liriano will make his return to the Pirates' rotation on Sunday against the Reds after missing a month with a strained left oblique. He held a 4.60 ERA before going on the DL but is probably worth starting in fantasy leagues immediately against a Reds lineup that's missing a couple key pieces.
Jul 13 - 10:55 AM

Pirates optioned 1B Matt Hague to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hague was hitless in two at-bats during his brief time with the big club. He's clearing room for the return of Francisco Liriano (oblique).
