Mike Montgomery gave up three runs in an inning of work before Friday's game against the Orioles was cut short due to rain.

Montgomery opened camp as a reliever, only to be thrust into the rotation mix because of the Rays' myriad injuries. If the season started tomorrow, either Montgomery or Everett Teaford, who started today and allowed one run in two innings, would be the Rays' fifth starter. Still, our guess is that the Rays will grab a veteran cut by another team to round out their rotation.

Twins sent RHP Lester Oliveros outright to Triple-A Rochester.

They now have an extra spot on their 40-man roster, which they're likely to use to add Blaine Boyer. Oliveros was sent to minor league camp earlier this month.

Marlins re-assigned INF Scott Sizemore to minor league camp.

Sizemore had four hits in just 12 spring at-bats. The oft-injured infielder will provide depth at Triple-A.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Friday that it "could be unlikely" Domonic Brown (Achilles) is ready for Opening Day.

Sandberg said the outfielder is coming along "slowly" in his recovery from left Achilles tendinitis, an ailment he was diagnosed with a week ago. Brown had been hoping to return to game action around the middle of next week, but it's sounding like that won't happen. The Phillies might be forced to start Jeff Francoeur in right field on Opening Day.

J.J. Hardy left Friday's game against the Rays with a sore left shoulder.

Hardy banged his shoulder on the ground on a dive up the middle. He's expected to be fine, though, as he wanted to take his next at-bat before Orioles manager Buck Showalter overruled him. Consider Hardy day-to-day.

Justin Verlander has been diagnosed with a right triceps cramp.

Verlander had to exit Friday's game with the ailment. Obviously any injury to a pitcher's arm is far from ideal, but the Tigers are convinced it's no big deal and expect the right-hander to be ready for his final spring training start next week. Verlander will be re-evaluated on Saturday.

Josh Reddick (oblique) is not expected to be ready for Opening Day.

Reddick has progressed in the right direction since tweaking his oblique three weeks ago, but he just doesn't have enough time to prepare for the opener. The outfielder is expected to return to game action over the weekend and isn't expected to miss more than a handful of regular season contests. Ben Zobrist will handle right field until Reddick is ready, with Eric Sogard filling in at second base. Tyler Ladendorf and Billy Burns now have a shot to crack the Opening Day roster.
Mar 27 - 2:13 PM

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Friday that Tyler Clippard will serve as the team's interim closer while Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is sidelined.

The announcement certainly comes as no surprise. Doolittle (shoulder) is slated to play catch on Friday, but he's still expected to miss around the first month of the season. Clippard will handle the ninth inning until Doolittle is ready, making him mixed-league worthy in fantasy leagues.
