Collin McHugh surrendered three runs over just 1 2/3 innings versus the Cardinals in his Grapefruit League debut Monday.

He coughed up five hits and walked a batter, getting chased before he could complete the second frame. McHugh has dealt with a "dead arm" this spring and is slated to start the season on the disabled list. Based on Monday's performance, it certainly looks like he needs some time.

Diamondbacks released OF Gregor Blanco.

Blanco has been battling an oblique injury that made him unlikely for the Opening Day roster, and the D'Backs have just decided to cut the veteran outfielder loose. He batted .225/.295/.400 this spring. It shouldn't take Blanco long to find a new gig, although it's possible he'll have to spend some time in the minors.

Tommy Joseph went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer on Monday against the Blue Jays.

And the longball came off of Jays closer Roberto Osuna. Joseph also added a double and a couple singles. The Phillies' first baseman got off to a slow start this spring but has heated up of late and is now up to a .304 average and .909 OPS with three dingers.

Vincent Velasquez whiffed seven across five frames of one-run ball against the Blue Jays on Monday.

Russell Martin popped a solo shot off of Velasquez, but the right-hander held the Jays in check otherwise. Velasquez has had an excellent spring, boasting a 2.75 ERA and 25/9 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings. He's a durability risk but should produce for fantasy owners while healthy.

Aaron Sanchez popped a blister on a finger on his pitching hand during Monday's start against the Phillies.

It helps explain why Sanchez issued three walks and gave up five runs -- four earned -- over 3 1/3 innings. The Blue Jays are hoping that the blister doesn't become an issue for the right-hander, but they'll just have to wait and see how it heals. Sanchez hasn't been good this spring with an 8.44 ERA, 2.06 WHIP and 8/9 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings.

Cardinals optioned RHP Mike Mayers to Triple-A Memphis; re-assigned OF Adolis Garcia and 3B Patrick Wisdom to minor league camp.

Mayers had a rough debut with the Cards last season but fared well this spring with a 1.64 ERA over seven appearances. He'll be part of Memphis' rotation.

Cardinals optioned C Carson Kelly to Triple-A Memphis.

Considered by many to be the top catching prospect in baseball, Kelly had a rough spring at the plate with a .182/.300/.182 line. The 22-year-old will get some more seasoning at Memphis while Yadier Molina and Eric Fryer handle the catching duties for the Cards.

Michael Brantley (shoulder) is scheduled to play in three straight Cactus League games beginning on Tuesday.

It looks to be the last test to see whether Brantley will be ready to play on Opening Day. Things have gone well to this point as Brantley ramps things up. He slugged his first Cactus League home run on Sunday and his surgically-repaired right shoulder has held up. However, the outfielder has ran into problems previously with the shoulder when he played in multiple games in a row. We'll know in a few days whether Brantley will be on the Opening Day roster or will need a little more rehab time. Even if he cracks the roster, fantasy owners should count on him being rested a lot early on.
