Taijuan Walker (shoulder) could begin playing catch by the end of this week.

Walker is tentatively scheduled to be examined by Dr. Edward Khalfaya on Wednesday and could gain clearance at that time to resume throwing. The righty was diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement after he had to be scratched from his last rehab outing when he couldn't get loose. Walker's stamina is already built up enough to rejoin the M's rotation, so it's all about how he feels at this point.

Michael Cuddyer (hamstring) remained out of the Rockies' lineup Sunday.

Cuddyer has now missed all three start of the weekend series against the Phillies. There's been no talk of a disabled list stint to this point, but obviously it will become an option if he doesn't recover in a hurry. Brandon Barnes is in right field Sunday in Cuddyer's place.

Shaun Marcum (thoracic outlet surgery) threw three innings in his most recent extended spring training appearance.

Marcum is progressing slowly but surely in his recovery from thoracic outlet surgery. The Indians have provided no timetable for the veteran right-hander's return. He has an opt-out clause for May 24 on his minor league contract.

Matt Kemp is not in the Dodgers' lineup Sunday.

He's just the odd man out for this one in the Dodgers' crowded outfield. Andre Ethier is handling center field Sunday and is being flanked by Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig.

MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports that A.J. Ellis (knee) is "well ahead" of his projected 4-6 week timetable.

Ellis is already doing workouts in full catcher's gear just 12 days removed from surgery to repair the medial meniscus in his left knee. He wasn't expected back until mid-May at the earliest, but it's sounding like he could beat that timetable.

Skip Schumaker (shoulder) is nearing a rehab assignment.

Schumaker took batting practice on the field Friday for the first time since dislocating his left shoulder. The one hurdle he has yet to clear is trying out some diving, though he thinks it "might be more mental than physical." Schumaker seems likely to return at the beginning of next month.
Apr 20 - 12:50 PM

Carlos Ruiz is not in the Phillies' lineup Sunday.

It's just a routine day of rest. Wil Nieves will catch Roberto Hernandez on Sunday.
Apr 20 - 12:18 PM

Tyler Lyons will start on Monday against the Mets.

The writing had been on the wall, and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny made it official Sunday morning. As long as he performs, Lyons will make at least two starts while Joe Kelly (hamstring) is on the DL. If Kelly's absence drags out longer, the club could consider giving Carlos Martinez a shot. Lyons holds a 3.32 ERA with 18 strikeouts over his first 19 Triple-A frames this season.
