Giants optioned OF Tyler Colvin to Triple-A Fresno.

It was reported that Colvin was given his release by the club, but it turns out the team just sent him down instead. Colvin is hitting .223/.268/.381 this season and could be recalled by the club in September.

Nick Castellanos had a good night at the plate, hitting a three-run home run and knocking in another run with a single over four at-bats as the Tigers handily defeated the White Sox on Wednesday.

Castellanos hasn't made noise with the bat in a while, as he last homered on June 27. His three-run blast capped off a six-run first inning against White Sox starter Hector Noesi. The 22-year-old rookie third baseman has had a mediocre year offensively, but there's certainly plenty of potential in his bat. He's slashing .267/.312/.409 with seven home runs and 41 RBI.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is hearing the Yankees have talked to the Phillies about Marlon Byrd, but nothing is close at present.

Byrd has been a popular name as the trade deadline approaches, and the Yankees are among the teams that have been linked to the 36-year-old in recent days. Heyman hears the club isn't wild about Byrd's $8 million contract in 2015, though, a possible sticking point for a deal. Byrd is hitting .270/.318/.477 with 20 home runs this season and would no doubt provide a boost to the Bronx Bombers' offense.

Dioner Navarro went 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs in the Blue Jays' 6-1 win over the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Navarro is batting .291 this month and .348 with two homers and eight RBI in 11 games since the All-Star break. That's why he's currently batting cleanup in Edwin Encarnacion's absence.

Mark Buehrle held the Red Sox to one run in 6 2/3 innings to finally pick up his 11th win Wednesday.

Buehrle had been stuck on 10 wins for nearly two months, going 0-6 in his previous nine starts. He does have a favorable outing coming up next, facing an Astros team he's 4-0 with a 0.89 ERA against lifetime. That might be tasty enough to make him worth using in mixed leagues again.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports the Marlins and White Sox have discussed a possible trade involving John Danks.

The Marlins are in a difficult position, stuck somewhere between a buyer and a seller. With their recent winning streak, though, it appears they've become buyers. Danks is signed through 2016, so any team taking him on would also have concerns about the $28.5 million he's owed over the duration of his deal.

Brandon Workman lost Wednesday in his return to the majors, giving up five runs -- two earned -- in five innings against the Blue Jays.

Only two runs were earned, but Workman contributed to the mess with an error and he finished the night with just two strikeouts and four walks. His chances of sticking in the majors this time currently hinge on what happens with Jon Lester and John Lackey before Thursday's trade deadline.

Dan Haren will start Friday's game against the Cubs.

After getting lit up on July 23, Haren was told he would have his next start skipped after struggling in four July starts. As it turns out, the start is just a few days later than originally scheduled. Haren is 8-8 with a 4.49 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 21 starts on the season.
