Blue Jays placed 1B/DH Dan Johnson on the disabled list with a hamstring strain.
Johnson has acted as an emergency bat to plug multiple injury holes in Toronto's lineup, posting a .235/.349/.382 slash line in limited at-bats. He might not be needed again once healthy.
According to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian, the Indians have traded Asdrubal Cabrera to the Nationals.
Zach Walters, a 24-year-old infielder with good numbers this year at Triple-A, is headed to Cleveland in return. Cabrera will play second base in Washington, with Ian Desmond remaining at shortstop and Anthony Rendon covering third base while Ryan Zimmerman recovers from a severe hamstring strain. Cabrera was batting just .246/.305/.386 in 97 games this season for the Tribe, but he has decent power for a middle infielder.
Padres acquired RHP Stephen Kohlscheen and OF Abraham Almonte from the Mariners for OF Chris Denorfia.
As a throw-in, San Diego could have done worse. Kohlscreen, a Southern League All-Star this year, should be able to carve out a career as a middle reliever. Across work with the Mariners' Triple- and Double-A affiliates this year, he's gone 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA with 55 strikeouts over 38 relief appearances. He's averaged more than a strikeout per inning in five minor league seasons.

A classic case of using an asset that has lost value to your organization (Denorfia is likely to be retired by the time San Diego returns to the playoffs) to buy low on an intriguing asset. Not long ago, Almonte was batting leadoff in the Mariners' Opening Day lineup. After a couple good games, he looked completely lost at the plate, and was banished to the minors in early May. Almonte, a former Yankees' farmhand, hammered the ball to the tune of a .300/.394/.482 slash line in the minors last year, but he's yet to pick up the pieces this year. Even so, his acquisition is a low-cost, worthwhile gamble for the Padres.

Seattle had to do something to fortify an uninspiring outfield consisting of Endy Chavez, James Jones, and Dustin Ackley, and Denorfia will have to do. He never offered a ton with the bat, and provides even less now (.242/.293/.319), but is a good defender who the M's can comfortably slot into all three positions as needed.
Carlos Gonzalez (ankle, knee) is back in the Rockies' starting lineup on Thursday.
CarGo missed Wednesday's game with lingering soreness in his knee and ankle. They're manageable injuries. He is batting fifth for Colorado on Thursday in Chicago.
Pirates designated RHP Josh Wall for assignment.
Wall was given the boot off the Bucs' 40-man roster on Thursday afternoon to clear a spot for Angel Sanchez, whom Pittsburgh claimed off waivers from the White Sox. The 27-year-old will likely pass through waivers.
Brewers transferred RHP Tyler Thornburg to the 60-day disabled list.
This is nothing more than a procedural move to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for new acquisition Gerardo Parra. Thornburg has been out since early June with a right elbow injury, but he does not need Tommy John surgery. He isn't close to rejoining the Brewers' bullpen.
