Marc Carig of Newsday reports that Steven Matz has been pitching through pain all season due to a nerve issue in his left elbow and could require surgery.

Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reported previously that Matz might be dealing with an arthritic left elbow, while Carig hears it's a issue similar to the one Jacob deGrom dealt with last season. Matz was given an injection Monday and the hope is that he'll return to pitch this year, but it sounds like surgery is on the table if the shot doesn't help. The left-hander has had a long history of elbow problems and has posted an ugly 6.07 ERA over 13 starts this season.

George Kontos was unavailable Sunday due to a tight groin, but he worked out pregame Monday and is ready to go.

Kontos has allowed just one run while striking out seven over five innings since the Pirates claimed him off waivers. He'll continue to operate in middle relief.

Cody Bellinger (ankle) won't return to the Dodgers' lineup until at least Wednesday.

Bellinger's right ankle is still swollen after he sprained it Saturday, and he'll miss at least three games. The rookie will be re-evaluated Wednesday to see if he's ready to go then or needs more time. The Dodgers can obviously afford to proceed cautiously here given their 20-game lead in the National League West.

Orioles released INF Paul Janish.

Janish is retiring from baseball and will take a coaching position at Rice University starting next season. The 34-year-old hit only .212/.280/.284 over parts of nine seasons in the majors, but he was able to sustain a nice little career on the strength of his glove and versatility.

Braves optioned LHP Rex Brothers to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Brothers has struck out 22 across 15 1/3 innings with the Braves, but he's also walked nine and posted a 7.63 ERA. The former Rockies closer will be back in September.

Braves activated RHP Dan Winkler from the 60-day disabled list.

Winkler barely pitched the last three years due to Tommy John surgery and then a fractured elbow, but he made 14 rehab appearances without any issues and is ready to go. He was a Rule 5 pick in December of 2014 and even if he stays on the Braves' roster for the rest of this season will have to be on the roster for a couple weeks next year to fulfill the Rule 5 requirement.

Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets are concerned that Steven Matz is dealing with an arthritic left elbow.

Manager Terry Collins didn't offer details Monday when announcing that Matz was headed to the disabled list, only saying that the lefty had an arm issue. However, it sounds like he might be dealing with arthritis in his pitching elbow. Given all the past elbow issues that Matz has had, it's not a terribly surprising diagnosis. The hope is that he'll feel better after the shot takes effect and he can rejoin the rotation, but a timetable isn't known at this point. Tommy Milone is taking Matz's spot in the Mets' rotation.

Nelson Cruz is not in the Mariners' lineup Monday.

Cruz is expected to be limited to pinch-hitting duty for the club's three games in Atlanta, as the M's don't want to play him in the outfield. It's obviously a bummer for his fantasy owners this week.
