Bryan Morris (back) acknowledged he might need surgery.

In fact, Morris went as far as to say that "surgery is the only option that can fix what is the issue." Manager Don Mattingly agreed that Morris' lumbar disc herniation probably isn't a "15-day thing." All signs are pointing to an extended absence for the 29-year-old.

Matt Boyd was scratched from his scheduled outing Thursday for Triple-A Toledo.

It looks like he's headed to Oakland to start Saturday against the Athletics. The Tigers need someone to fill in for Jordan Zimmermann, who is out with a groin injury. Boyd made one appearance for the Tigers earlier this season, scattering two hits over 4 2/3 shutout innings against Cleveland on April 24. He's registered a 2.06 ERA in eight starts for Toledo this year.

Drew VerHagen returned to Detroit for an MRI on Thursday.

Triple-A Toledo placed him on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury. VerHagen has a history of back issues, having missed most of the 2014 campaign with a stress fracture. We should know more on his status Friday. VerHagen was sent to the minors Sunday after posting a 7.11 ERA in his first 19 outings for Detroit.

J.A. Happ allowed just one run and three hits over seven innings Thursday in a victory over the Yankees.

We could call this a renaissance for Happ, but that would suggest he was ever very good in the first place. He's 6-2 with a 3.20 ERA so far this year. His 42/20 K/BB ratio through 64 2/3 innings isn't particularly impressive, but he's getting a few more grounders and doing a better job of avoiding the home run ball than he used to.

CC Sabathia held the Blue Jays to a pair of unearned runs over seven innings in a loss Thursday.

Sabathia certainly pitched well enough to win -- he allowed two hits, walked one and struck out seven -- but run support was a problem today. Sabathia has allowed just one earned run over 20 innings in three starts this month. That's a whole lot better than in April, when he had a 5.06 ERA that could have been considerably worse if not for some early hooks (he pitched 21 1/3 innings in his four starts that month).

Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-4 and struck out twice against the Blue Jays in his return from the disabled list Thursday.

The Yankees had just four hits on the day, so A-Rod wasn't the only one to have a bad game. Still, one wonders if he might fade into a part-time role if he doesn't hit soon. The Yankees might be better off with Carlos Beltran DHing and Aaron Hicks in the outfield.

Thursday's game between the White Sox and Royals has been postponed due to rain.

No makeup date has been announced. Danny Duffy and Miguel Gonzalez had been the scheduled starters. They'll start Friday's game instead. That's a huge break for Kansas City as Chris Sale's start has been pushed back to Monday against the Mets.
May 26 - 7:23 PM

Sonny Gray (shoulder) played catch on Thursday.

It's the first time he's done that since going on the disabled list with a strained trapezius. Gray hasn't looked right all year. In nine starts, he holds a 6.19 ERA to go with an equally embarrassing 1.65 WHIP. Gray is eligible to come off the disabled list on June 6, though he might need more time.
