Daniel Mengden was lifted after allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings Monday in a no-decision against the Rangers.

Mengden doesn't have a single quality start in five tries this month; he's given up 23 earned runs over 23 innings. It's time for him to head back to Triple-A, though whether that happens could hinge on Rich Hill's status. One thing is for sure: Jesse Hahn is more deserving of the rotation spot right now (though there might be room for both).

Ryan Madson took his sixth blown save after giving up a two-run homer to the Rangers in Monday's loss.

Madson has given up a whopping five homers and 10 runs in his last 12 innings of work, so his time as a closer could be coming to a close. Ryan Dull has looked like Oakland's best reliever all season long and is worthy of an opportunity.

Orioles optioned OF Dariel Alvarez to Triple-A Norfolk.

The move is expected to clear the way for Hyun Soo Kim to return from the disabled list. Alvarez is 1-for-3 with a double in two games with the Orioles this season and should be back later this summer.

Danny Valencia went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI against the Rangers in a loss Monday.

Valencia is the hitter the A's wanted Billy Butler to be when they gave him a three-year deal prior to 2015, and the A's have responded to it by cutting back his playing time against righties lately. It doesn't make a lot of sense to us. Valencia isn't great against righties, but neither are the alternatives the A's possess. Ideally, Valencia would get traded this week.

Jose Iglesias singled and smacked a two-run homer in Monday's victory over the Red Sox.

Drew Pomeranz had held the Tigers off the scoreboard until Iglesias launched a towering blast over the Green Monster with one out in the sixth inning. He also singled and scored in the eighth. Iglesias has batted second each of the last two nights with Cameron Maybin sitting out with a back ailment.

The Rangers will call up Nick Martinez to start Tuesday against the Athletics.

It was assumed after Martinez was scratched from his start at Triple-A on Sunday, but it's now official. He'll essentially take Kyle Lohse's spot in the rotation. Martinez has posted an ugly 6.45 ERA over four starts and two relief appearances with the Rangers this season, but he has had better results since being sent down to the minors earlier this month. Still, he's not a recommended fantasy option.

Sandy Leon went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in Monday's loss to the Tigers.

Leon's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth pulled the Red Sox to within two runs, but the Tigers then escaped the jam. He will undoubtedly go into a tailspin at the plate at some point, but Leon has somehow managed a .400/.442/.650 batting line through 80 at-bats.

Michael Pineda held the Astros to one run in seven innings and struck out eight in a victory on Monday.

After stumbling in his first two starts of the month, Pineda has bounced back to allow one run in 13 innings his last two times out. He's sporting an outstanding 135/31 K/BB ratio in 113 1/3 innings for the year.
