Royals prospect Yordano Ventura allowed seven runs (six earned runs) on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings in his start Wednesday with Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Ventura hadn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his previous outings, so it's the first time he's struggled in eight starts this season. The 21-year-old top prospect has a 2.82 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP and 12.1 K/9 over 45 innings at the Double-A level. Prior to his latest outing, he had a a pair of 10-strikeout games in and 28 total strikeouts in his last four starts.

Orioles prospect outfielder Henry Urrutia is batting .333/.413/.542 with three home runs and 19 RBI in 25 games with Double-A Bowie.

Urrutia, 26, defected from Cuba last season but visa issues delayed him from making his debut until a month ago. Given his advanced age and track record, he likely isn't far off from a promotion to Triple-A Norfolk.

Orioles prospect Brandon Kline (ankle) has been placed on the disabled list with Low-A Delmarva.

Kline underwent surgery Thursday to repair a non-displaced ankle fracture and will be sidelined 6-8 weeks. A second-round pick in 2012, Kline had a 5.86 ERA in seven starts at the Orioles' Low-A affiliate.

Padres optioned RHP Burch Smith to Triple-A Tucson.

Smith was sent down after he lasted just one-plus inning in a loss Wednesday to the Cardinals. The 23-year-old struggled with an 18.41 ERA in his first three major league starts. Smith opened the season with Double-A San Antonio, but the Padres are hoping he can turn things around the Triple-A level.

Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that Jesus Montero will be demoted to the Triple-A level.

It had to be done. Montero has been a major disappointment this season for Seattle, batting .208/.264/.327 with three home runs and nine RBI in 29 games. He also had an ugly set of stats in 2012 and could be kept down on the farm for a while. Divish writes that the M's "may have finally taken a step back from the idea that Montero will be a catcher at the big league level" and will play him primarily at first base and DH in Triple-A. Jesus Sucre will be promoted to fill the roster vacancy.

Matt Dominguez (quad) is expected to return to the Astros' starting lineup on Friday evening.

Dominguez sat out Wednesday and will also use Thursday's scheduled team off day to rest his tight left quad. "I’m starting to figure certain things out at the plate, and I like to play," said the third baseman, "but it’s better to take the two days off now than risking weeks when it’s something that can be treated pretty easily."

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington confirmed Thursday that he has not engaged in long-term talks with Jacoby Ellsbury.

"Because Ellsbury has gone through arbitration the last three years, there’s been an opportunity to talk to [agent Scott Boras] and Jacoby each of those years in the winter before spring training or early in spring training about his status," said Cherington. "And each of those years we’ve signed a one-year deal." Ellsbury, 29, is set to become a free agent after the 2013 season. He has a disappointing .673 OPS since the start of the 2012 campaign.

Darin Ruf could be called up this weekend.

Ruf is batting .263/.341/.431 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 42 games this year at the Triple-A level. Those aren't spectacular numbers, but Chase Utley (rib cage) may be headed to the disabled list and the Phillies will need an extra bat for their interleague series early next week in Boston. Ruf is unlikely to be fantasy-relevant.
