Brett Gardner is out Wednesday with a stiff neck.

It doesn't sound like it will be a lingering thing. Gardner doubled and scored a run on Tuesday night and is batting .309/.404/.444 with 18 runs scored in 23 games this season.

Jordan Walden will be sidelined for the next 6-10 weeks with a right shoulder strain.

The good news is that he doesn't need surgery. Walden was used heavily during the first month of the season and began reporting stiffness in his right shoulder in early May. The hard-throwing setup man will be missed. He had registered a 0.87 ERA and 12 strikeouts over his first 10 1/3 innings (12 appearances) with the Cardinals.

Alcides Escobar (head) took infield and batting practice Wednesday afternoon without issue.

Escobar was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list retroactive to April 29. He could return Thursday, but the Royals aren't revealing their plans for him quite yet. The speedy shortstop was batting .291/.329/.367 with two steals and 10 runs scored in 19 games.

Carlos Perez is getting his second consecutive start at catcher Wednesday against the Mariners.

Perez made his major league debut on Tuesday night and went 2-for-4 with a walkoff solo home run to lift Anaheim over Seattle. He was tearing the cover off the ball at Triple-A and could continue to draw regular playing time with the Halos if his bat stays hot at the major league level. Chris Iannetta is hitting just .094/.192/.109 in 73 plate appearances this season.

Bruce Chen will make a spot start for the Indians this Saturday against the Twins.

It was either going to be him or Shaun Marcum. Chen is off to a terrific start this season at Triple-A Columbus and could be worth streaming against a weak Twins lineup. The 37-year-old left-hander signed a minor league contract with the Tribe in February.

Pirates prospect Austin Meadows had his five-game hitting streak snapped Monday in a win for High-A Bradenton.

Meadows is hitting just under .300 with seven RBI in 22 appearances. The 20-year-old went to a chiropractor during the offseason to get his hips realigned and the procedure seems to have paid off. MLB.com's 45th-ranked prospect is thriving as a leadoff man and seems to have found some untapped potential as a base stealer. Though not an overwhelming threat, he's already tied a career-high with three stolen bases.

Royals recalled C Francisco Pena from Triple-A Omaha.

Pena will serve as the backup to Royals catcher Salvador Perez while Erik Kratz recovers from a foot injury. Pena, 25, is doubtful to carry much fantasy value.
May 6 - 4:54 PM

Royals placed C Erik Kratz on the 15-day disabled list with a foot injury.

It's not clear how long Kratz will be sidelined. He has logged just five plate appearances (and zero hits) this season as the backup to catcher Salvador Perez.
