Kyle Gibson pitched four-hit ball for eight innings and combined with Anthony Swarzak on a shutout of the Blue Jays on Thursday.

It's a depleted Blue Jays lineup, but that's still quite an outing for the 26-year-old. He's already 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA this year after going 2-4 with a 6.53 ERA in 10 starts as a rookie last season. While he should remain a decent enough AL-only starter, we don't expect him to last as an asset in mixed leagues.

R.A. Dickey lasted just 4 1/3 innings and gave up five runs in a loss to the Twins on Thursday.

Dickey's slow start last year could be explained by a sore back that robbed his knuckler of some velocity. This year, he has no such excuse; he just hasn't been able to locate. He's been effective in just one of his four starts, when he walked one batter in 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Yankees. In his other three starts, he's walked 14 in 16 1/3 innings. Mixed leaguers might want to try another option next week.

Joe Mauer contributed two hits and scored two runs Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Mauer has been striking out more than usual -- 17 times in 14 games -- but he has his average up to .293, and with nine walks mixed in, he's scored 10 runs. That's quite an improvement over his pace from last year, when, despite a .404 OBP, he scored just 62 times in 113 games.

Doug Fister (lat) threw two innings Thursday in an extended spring training game.

Fister threw a total of 28 pitches. He's expected to three innings next time out before going on a minor league rehab assignment. Barring any setbacks, the hope is that he'll join Washington's rotation in about 20 days.

Twins' No. 8 hitter Aaron Hicks went 0-for-4 in Thursday's win, dropping his average to .170.

Hicks has walked nine times in 47 at-bats, but he's not making any sort of case to move into the leadoff spot yet. Maybe that will come later. As is, he's just fighting to stay in the lineup.
Apr 17 - 4:24 PM

Ryan Goins went 0-for-3 as the Blue Jays' No. 9 hitter on Thursday and is 5-for-36 with 10 strikeouts this season.

Goins is in there for his glove, but he can't be this inept with the bat and still be an adequate regular. If not for Maicer Izturis's injury, he likely would have been in line to lose a lot of playing time following Jose Reyes's return tomorrow. As is, he'll likely remain the primary second baseman, though he will get some competition from Munenori Kawasaki.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that the Mets attended a throwing session for Joel Hanrahan (elbow) on Thursday.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported last week that the Yankees, Royals, Athletics, Red Sox, and Dodgers were among the other teams expected to be in attendance. Hanrahan is working his way back from Tommy John and flexor tendon surgeries and should be ready to contribute in the majors soon. The Mets might make sense for him, as he could get some save chances with Bobby Parnell (Tommy John surgery) out for the year and Jose Valverde appearing quite vulnerable.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Joe Blanton has not officially retired.

Blanton left the Athletics' Triple-A team after two outings, but he hasn't decided whether he'll give up baseball for good. Regardless, the Angels will pay him the $9.5 million remaining on his contract. The 33-year-old owns an 85-89 record and 4.51 ERA in the majors.
