Alex Cobb struck out 12 while allowing one run over eight innings, and the Rays beat the Brewers 5-1 on Tuesday.

Cobb has now turned in back-to-back double-digit strikeout games, as he struck out 10 in a win over the Cardinals his last time out. The right-hander gave up just three hits, all singles, while walking two on the night. He's in the midst of a five-game winning streak that has his record over .500 for the first time this season at 7-6. The A's are the next team that will try to stop Cobb, as the two clubs will meet in Oakland on Monday.

Victor Martinez singled three times in four at-bats, but the Tigers were routed by the White Sox on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old had been in a bit of a slump since the second half began, but he was able to enjoy his first three-hit night since June 14. Due to missing time with injuries, as well as the All-Star break, the veteran hasn't homered since July 3, but he still maintains an impressive .325/.387/.568 slash line with 21 home runs and 57 RBI. He's four home runs away from tying his career high of 25.

WEEI.com's Rob Bradford was told by a rival general manager that a Jon Lester trade is likely to be completed late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

The Red Sox have already scratched Lester from his scheduled start Wednesday, suggesting a deal is imminent. The Brewers and Orioles, two teams that have been connected to Lester, have been ruled out as potential landing spots. The Pirates, Blue Jays, Mariners, Cardinals, Dodgers and Marlins are among the clubs that have been linked to Lester.

Carlos Gomez went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in a loss to the Rays on Tuesday.

Gomez shouldn't feel too bad -- Rays starter Alex Cobb racked up 12 strikeouts on the evening, so his teammates did plenty of swinging and missing as well. Gomez is now 0-for-12 with six strikeouts in his last three games, dropping his slash line to .297/.359/.494. He's too talented to be mired in a slump for much longer, so a multi-hit game should be in the cards soon.

Jose Abreu went 3-for-4, hitting a two-run home run and a two-run double in Tuesday's trampling of the Tigers.

Abreu added insult to injury, smoking his 31st home run in the seventh inning, accounting for the fifth and sixth runs in a seven-run frame. In the eighth, Abreu doubled in a pair of runs to make it 11-2. As a result, Abreu now leads the big leagues in RBI with 83. Just for good measure, the Cuban rookie also has a fantastic .299/.349/.632 slash line.

Marlins optioned OF Jake Marisnick to Triple-A New Orleans.

Marisnick is batting just .167/.216/.167 across 51 plate appearances this season. He'll be back in September, if not before.

Logan Forsythe had a pinch-hit RBI double and scored a run in a win over the Brewers on Tuesday.

Forsythe pinch-hit for Matt Joyce against left-handed reliever Will Smith and came through with a double to score the game's third run. Forsythe also came around to score later in the inning. The part-time utility man has 16 RBI to go with a .246/.294/.350 line overall.

Casey Janssen allowed a ninth-inning solo home run, but managed to escape with his 17th save as the Blue Jays earned a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Xander Bogaerts greeted Janssen with a solo shot to lead off the ninth inning, but the right-hander was able to get the next three batters he faced in short order. July has been troublesome for Janssen, as he has allowed runs in five of 11 appearances in the month while sporting a 6.10 ERA. On the season, he is 17-for-19 in save opportunities with a 2.96 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and a 16/2 K/BB ratio in 27 1/3 innings.
