Buck Farmer will be called up to start the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the White Sox.

Farmer will be the Tigers' 26th man on Friday, so he'll be one-and-done in the starting rotation. The nightcap will be started by left-hander Matt Boyd. Farmer is winless with a 9.68 ERA in eight career big league starts.

Manuel Margot (calf) is not in the Padres' lineup Thursday against the Mets.

Margot tweaked his calf breaking for a fly ball a few days ago and is still feeling a little sore. Matt Szczur is holding down the fort in center field and batting seventh Thursday against Mets right-hander Rafael Montero. Consider Margot day-to-day.

Padres optioned INF/OF Carlos Asuaje to Triple-A El Paso.

The Padres had to clear a roster spot for tonight's starting pitcher, Dinelson Lamet. Asuaje went hitless in two at-bats during his brief stay in the big leagues. He'll be back at some point this summer.

Padres recalled RHP Dinelson Lamet from Triple-A El Paso.

Lamet will make his big league debut Thursday against the Mets. The forecast is calling for storms so he could be in for a short night. The 24-year-old has impressed in the minors this year, producing a 3.23 ERA with an elite 11.54 K/9 over eight starts for El Paso. Despite his success, fantasy owners would probably be best off using a "wait-and-see" approach with the young right-hander.

Ben Zobrist went 3-for-4 and hit his sixth homer as the Cubs topped the Giants 5-1 on Thursday.

Zobrist is 13-for-28 with three homers during his current eight-game hitting streak. He's raised his OPS from .686 to .822 over the stretch.

Evan Gattis is not in the Astros' lineup Thursday against the Tigers.

Gattis could use a rest after starting four of the last five games behind the plate. Juan Centeno will catch for Mike Fiers in Thursday's series finale. Gattis will go back to splitting catching duties with Brian McCann (concussion) when he returns from the disabled list this weekend.
May 25 - 5:43 PM

Eddie Butler pitched five innings and allowed one run in a victory over the Giants on Thursday.

Oddly, manager Joe Maddon opted to let Butler hit in the bottom of the fifth and then pulled him to start the sixth after just 69 pitches. It makes plenty of sense to tread carefully with the 26-year-old Butler, who battled shoulder problems and was constantly mishandled by the Rockies. He'll likely be inconsistent but occasionally excellent for as long as the Cubs keep him in the rotation.
May 25 - 5:41 PM

Mike Montgomery pitched four scoreless innings for a save against the Giants on Thursday.

Montgomery came into a 2-1 game and stayed in as the Cubs added three insurances runs. It was his first career save. He's now thrown 31 2/3 innings this year, putting him on an incredibly high pace for a reliever. The Cubs could back off him or some or they still could transition him into the rotation at some point.
