Matt Shoemaker picked up his ninth victory of the season on Friday, limiting the Rays to three runs (two earned) on eight hits over his five innings of work.

The young right-hander struck out just one without walking a batter in the ballgame. The Angels terrific bullpen took over from there, with Jason Grilli, Kevin Jepsen, Joe Smith and Huston Street each working a scoreless inning to close out the game. Now 9-3, Shoemaker will carry a 4.09 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 78/15 K/BB ratio into Wednesday's matchup against the Dodgers.

Evan Longoria went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a losing effort against the Angels on Friday.

A pair of runs actually scored on his single in the fifth inning, the second of which came across as Longoria was cut down between first and second base. With the two-hit effort, he's now slashing .257/.333/.391 on the season to compliment his 12 homers and 54 RBI.

Desmond Jennings had a miserable night at the plate in Friday's loss to the Angels, going 0-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts.

The final strikeout was particularly disheartening, as the Rays loaded the bases to start the ninth inning before he whiffed against Huston Street. It has been a disappointing season for the dynamic young outfielder, slashing .238/.323/.381 with nine homers, 28 RBI and 13 swipes.

Anthony Ranaudo picked up his first major league win on Friday, allowing two runs in six innings against the Yankees.

Not only was it his first major league win, it was his first major league start, and it came against the Yankees no less. He walked four and recorded two strikeout. Carlos Beltran accounted for both runs against Ranaudo, with a solo home run in the fourth and RBI single in the sixth. Ranaudo is one of the beneficiaries of Boston's decision to do away with almost their entire rotation. The 6'7" righty had recorded a 2.41 ERA and a 12-4 record through 21 starts at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Jeremy Hellickson was hit hard in Friday's loss to the Angels, allowing four runs on six hits over his four innings of work.

Hellickson struck out four and walked two on the night. He has shown inconsistency in his return from the disabled list, registering a 3.29 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 11/5 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings. He'll do battle against the Athletics his next time out in Oakland on Wednesday.
Aug 1 - 10:55 PM

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 26th home run of the season, going for 1-for-3 in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Reds.

Stanton hit the eighth inning tater off Jonathan Broxton. Unfortunately for the Marlins, it was just a solo shot when they were already down 4-1. The RBI was Stanton's 74th of the year. Stanton remains one of the most dangerous bats in the bigs, and he's slashing .293/.394/.552 on the season.
Aug 1 - 10:49 PM

Mat Latos allowed only one run over seven innings against the Marlins on Friday.

Latos struck out five, walked four and surrendered five hits. The lone Marlin run off Latos was knocked in on a Jordany Valdespin RBI single in the fifth. That's two starts in a row in which Latos has walked four, but his ERA still sits at a nice 3.07. He'll take on the Indians and try to improve on this one.
Aug 1 - 10:41 PM

Jesus Guzman was removed from Friday's game against the Blue Jays due to back spasms.

Guzman had been 1-for-2 with an RBI single before departing. He has been abysmal at the plate this season, slashing a meager .200/.275/.269 with just eight RBI.
