The 49ers and Falcons have both requested permission to speak with Broncos OC Adam Gase about their head coaching vacancies.
Kirk Cousins said he wants to be traded if Robert Griffin III is named the Redskins 2015 starter.
It's the offseason once again in Washington, which means more headline-grabbing statements from Cousins. Note that this is a guy who torpedoed any trade value he had by throwing nine interceptions in six appearances and going 1-4 as a starter. Cousins ended the season behind both Colt McCoy and RG3 on the depth chart. He wouldn't fetch anything more than a seventh-round pick (if that) on the trade market.
Tom Coughlin has been told he will return to the Giants in 2015.
Coughlin has gone 22-26 over the last three seasons, failing to make the playoffs each year. But the Giants were able to finish strong once again this season, winning three of their final four games on the backs of Eli Manning and Odell Beckham. Coughlin, 68, clearly has more leash than most NFL coaches because he's won two Super Bowls for the Giants. But anything short of a playoff berth in 2015 should be the end of his run. There's no word yet on the fate of DC Perry Fewell, who may end up taking the fall here.
Ryan Fitzpatrick (leg) said he's about two months away from being able to work out.
Fitzpatrick fractured his tibia during Week 15. He'll be fully healed for training camp and will likely be part of some kind of competition. Fitzpatrick, 32, posting a strong 95.3 passer rating this season but went 6-6 as a starter and was benched in favor of Ryan Mallett midseason.
A source tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Browns OC Kyle Shanahan is on the 49ers' list of head coaching candidates.
Shanahan is going to be on the list for a lot of head coaching vacancies. A talented game-planner and offensive schemer, Mike Shanahan's son was handcuffed this year by Brian Hoyer. The Browns still averaged 23.2 points per game for the first nine weeks before a myriad of issues and injuries torpedoed them. Kyle has also had mostly successful stints guiding the offenses of the Texans (2008-09) and Redskins (2010-13). His experience with Robert Griffin III pre-injury in 2012 would be interesting for the Niners as they try to get Colin Kaepernick pointed upward again.
Impending free agent Roy Helu said his return to Washington is 50-50.
Helu is excited to hit the open market and he should be. Long underutilized by the Redskins, he's averaged 4.80 YPC while sustaining health over the last two seasons. He's also excelled in the pass game. Helu won't be expensive and can help a ton of teams.
GM Steve Keim said the team is "hopeful" Drew Stanton (knee) can play in Saturday's Wild Card game at Carolina.
The Cardinals are officially calling Stanton day to day. However, he's dealing with a serious sprain in his knee and reportedly underwent surgery to clean up an infection. We'll consider him very questionable for a game the 11-5 Cardinals are a four-point underdog in against the 7-8-1 Panthers.
Jaguars DT Sen'Derrick Marks tore his ACL in Sunday's Week 17 loss to the Texans.
Marks was one of the Jaguars' true bright spots on defense this season, compiling 44 tackles, 8.5 sacks, three batted passes and 10 tackles for a loss while playing in all 16 games for the second straight year. He was PFF's No. 17 defensive tackle among 81 qualifiers. Now Marks, heading into the third year of a five-year contract, has a 6-9 month rehab timetable in front of him.
