Jose Abreu launched a two-run homer Friday in a losing effort against the Yankees.

Abreu finished July with a flourish, batting .381 (16-for-42) with four home runs and 15 RBI over his last 11 games. He has hit safely in all of them. The 28-year-old is in a good situation in Chicago and it would be no surprise if he led the AL in homers over the final two months of the season.

Adam LaRoche went 4-for-5 with an RBI single in Friday's loss to the Yankees.

His four hits tied a career-high. With the White Sox being blown out, LaRoche also got to pitch the ninth inning and made it through a scoreless frame with a strikeout. A big night on what has mostly been a frustrating year for him.
Aug 1 - 1:44 AM

Jason Hammel gave up one run in 5 2/3 innings of work Friday in a 4-1 win over the Brewers.

The lone run scored on a solo homer from Ryan Braun in the first inning. Hammel gave up six hits in all while walking two and striking out four, which was good enough for his first win since June 6. It was nice to see after he was knocked around for six runs by the Phillies last time out. The 32-year-old has a strong 3.13 ERA over 20 starts this season and has an important start next time out against the Giants at home.
Aug 1 - 1:17 AM

Taylor Jungmann fell to the Cubs on Friday after giving up three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings.

Jungmann threw a career-high 112 pitches. While he failed to make it out of the sixth inning, he pitched fairly well, allowing seven hits and two walks while notching seven strikeouts. The 25-year-old has held his own during his first stint in the majors, posting a 2.23 ERA and 53/21 K/BB ratio in 64 2/3 innings over 10 starts. However, we're still a bit hesitant about trusting him in mixed fantasy leagues.
Aug 1 - 1:17 AM

Hector Rondon tossed a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the Brewers for his 15th save of the season.

Rondon struck out one batter in the frame and worked around a one-out single from Shane Peterson to lock down the victory. Cubs manager Joe Maddon backed off Rondon for a stretch, but he has now gone to him for saves in each of the last three days. While he has reestablished himself as the team's closer, look for him to get a day off Saturday.
Aug 1 - 1:16 AM

Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk, and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Brewers.

Rizzo has now gone deep in each of the last three games. The 25-year-old had just one home run in 31 games prior to this recent power surge.
Aug 1 - 1:16 AM

Starlin Castro knocked in two runs against the Brewers on Friday.

Castro had an RBI single in the second inning before hitting into a fielder's choice in the fourth inning to drive in another run. The 25-year-old was in the middle of trade discussions this week, but the Cubs are surely hoping he'll breathe a bit easier now that the deadline has passed. He owns a disappointing .237/.271/.304 batting line on the year.
Aug 1 - 1:16 AM

Ryan Braun smacked a solo homer Friday against the Cubs.

His first-inning blast against Jason Hammel was the only offense of the game for the Brewers. Braun had a fairly quiet July overall, but he has three home runs over his last seven games.
