Tony Sipp (calf) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Corpus Christi.

Sipp has been out all month with left calf soreness. The southpaw shouldn't need much work before rejoining the Astros' bullpen.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Phillies are set to sign free agent right-hander Henderson Alvarez.

It's expected to be a minor league deal. He'll make a prorated salary of $750,000 if he's called up by the Phillies. Alvarez hasn't appeared in a major league game since May of 2015 due to shoulder issues, but Heyman writes that he's been hitting 98 mph while pitching for the independent Long Island Ducks, though he had more walks (14) than strikeouts (13) in 32 innings. We're not expecting much from a fantasy perspective.

Phillies transferred RHP Vince Velasquez from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot for Yacksel Rios on the 40-man roster. As for Velasquez, his season is now officially over. The right-hander felt some numbness in his finger in a start earlier this month and was reportedly scheduled to visit a doctor who specializes in thoracic outlet syndrome. More should be known on his status soon.

Phillies purchased the contract of RHP Yacksel Rios from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Rios had some underwhelming numbers coming into 2017, but he has reeled off a dominant 1.92 ERA and 64/14 K/BB ratio over 56 1/3 innings this year between Double- and Triple-A. The 24-year-old figures to pitch in middle relief initially, but he's a potential late-inning arm.

Phillies placed RHP Zach Eflin on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 20, with a right shoulder strain.

Eflin suffered the injury during Friday's start and will now get some extended rest. His exit was originally considered precautionary, so perhaps he'll be ready to return around the beginning of September.

Phillies recalled RHP Nick Pivetta from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Pivetta was sent down less than a week ago, but he's back to serve as the 26th man for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Marlins. He's due to start the second game. Pivetta has a 6.25 ERA and 99/40 K/BB ratio in 93 2/3 innings over 18 starts this season.
Aug 22 - 12:48 PM

The Mets are expected to recall right-hander Kevin McGowan from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

McGowan was up with the Mets for a few days earlier this month, but he didn't make an appearance. The 25-year-old has a 4.06 ERA and 55/24 K/BB ratio over 62 innings in Triple-A this year.
Aug 22 - 12:45 PM

Yankees activated RHP Masahiro Tanaka from the 10-day disabled list.

Tanaka went down a week and a half ago with shoulder inflammation, but he'll make his return Tuesday against the Tigers. The hope is that the extra rest will get him back on track for the stretch run. Tanaka uncharacteristically walked five batters over four innings in his most recent start back on August 9.
