Athletics placed LHP Rich Hill on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 20, with a blister on his left hand.
Hill wasn't going to start again for the A's before the trade deadline, so there's really no harm in better utilizing his roster spot. There remains a very high likelihood that he's wearing a new uniform when August begins.
Athletics recalled RHP Dillon Overton from Triple-A Nashville.
He'll start for the A's on Saturday against Josh Tomlin and the Indians. Overton has made three spot starts for the Athletics this season, posting an 8.40 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 10/5 K/BB ratio over 15 innings. He shouldn't be viewed as an attractive streaming option.
Denard Span (quad) is not in the Giants starting lineup for Saturday afternoon's tilt against the Nationals.
Span suffered a bruised quadriceps in a collision at first base during Friday's game, so he'll sit out on Saturday as a precautionary measure. Gregor Blanco is starting in his place in center field and batting eighth against Reynaldo Lopez and the Nationals.
Brandon Crawford (hand) is not in the Giants starting lineup on Saturday.
Crawford is dealing with a bruised hand and is considered day-to-day. Eduardo Nunez is starting in his place at shortstop and batting leadoff in his Giants debut on Saturday afternoon.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Rangers have talked to the White Sox about Jose Quintana in addition to Chris Sale.
As with their inquiry on Sale, Rosenthal notes that the talks didn't go very far due to the differences each club had in the hurler's perceived value. The Rangers look as though they are exploring every possible avenue in their search for upgrades to their starting rotation.
Giants designated INF Ramiro Pena for assignment.
The veteran infielder was squeezed off of the Giants roster with the addition of Eduardo Nunez and return of Hunter Pence. There's a decent chance that he'll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as organizational depth in the minors for the Giants.
Giants activated OF Hunter Pence from the 15-day disabled list.
Pence will return to the Giants starting lineup on Saturday against the Nationals. Prior to landing on the shelf with his hamstring injury, the 33-year-old outfielder was hitting .298 with seven homers and 36 RBI in only 181 at-bats.
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Athletics will not trade Sonny Gray before Monday's trade deadline.
It was always considered a longshot that the right-hander would be moved at the deadline, but now it looks as though he will certainly remain an Athletic. His rotation-mate Rich Hill, however, looks increasingly likely to be moved despite his blister issues.
