Mariners released RHP Kevin Correia.

Correia was going to use his April 1 opt-out, so the M's just decided to cut ties with him here on March 30. The 34-year-old right-hander posted a 16.88 ERA in three appearances this spring in the Cactus League. He'll have to settle for another minor league deal.

Jake Petricka will open the season on the disabled list.

The stint can be backdated so that Petricka is available for activation on April 11. And the White Sox feel he should be ready by then. Petricka came down with some forearm soreness late last week, but an MRI was taken and showed no structural damage. He'll work in a setup role this year behind White Sox closer David Robertson.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Kevin Correia plans to opt out of his contract with the Mariners.

The minor league deal carries an April 1 opt-out date and Correia is going to look for a new opportunity on the open market after struggling in Mariners camp. The 34-year-old right-hander posted a 16.88 ERA in three appearances this spring in the Cactus League.
Mar 30 - 2:08 PM

Cardinals purchased the contract of RHP Carlos Villanueva from Triple-A Memphis.

Villanueva was told Monday morning that he had made the Cardinals' Opening Day roster. The 31-year-old right-hander will pitch in long relief for St. Louis.
Mar 30 - 1:26 PM

Cardinals placed LHP Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury.

Garcia was having a really promising spring up until this weekend, when his long-running shoulder issues resurfaced. It's impossible to guess how much the 28-year-old southpaw will be able to contribute this season. Carlos Martinez is expected to be the Cardinals' fifth starter.
Mar 30 - 1:22 PM

Cubs reassigned 3B Kris Bryant and SS Addison Russell to minor league camp.

Bryant was the best hitter in the Cactus League this spring, but the Cubs can get an extra year of control on him if they leave him off their roster for another two weeks. The 23-year-old top third base prospect should be mashing in the majors by the middle of April.
Mar 30 - 1:19 PM

Cubs optioned INF Javier Baez to Triple-A Iowa.

Baez batted just .173/.218/.231 with 20 strikeouts in 16 games this spring in the Cactus League, looking like the very same hitter who hit .169/.227/.324 with 95 strikeouts in 52 games last season as a rookie. Tommy La Stella and Arismendy Alcantara will see time at second base until the powerful but inconsistent Baez improves his plate discipline.
Mar 30 - 1:02 PM

Padres acquired RHP Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later from the Mets for LHP Alex Torres.

Mazzoni posted an underwhelming 4.67 ERA and 49/12 K/BB ratio in 52 innings last season for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate and he had been struggling this spring in the Grapefruit League. The right-hander was a second-round pick in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft, but he's not much of a prospect.
