Dodgers designated LHP Scott Elbert for assignment.

Elbert's career has been sabotaged by injuries, as he's had three elbow surgeries since his last big league appearance in 2012 and also missed a year in the minors due to shoulder surgery. The lefty has posted a 4.26 ERA over 15 rehab appearances while working his way back from his latest operation, and the Dodgers have apparently decided just to cut bait. He's 28 and throws left-handed, so someone will give him a shot.

Todd Frazier knocked in what turned out to be the deciding run, finishing 2-for-4 overall in Tuesday's 3-0 victory over the D'Backs.

Frazier singled in Billy Hamilton in the first inning, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. It would be all the offense Mike Leake needed, as the Reds' starter blanked the D'Backs over 7 2/3 innings. Jonathan Broxton and Aroldis Chapman combined to get the final four outs for the shutout. With Joey Votto out, Frazier and Devin Mesoraco have been the lifeblood of the struggling Reds' offense. The third baseman has a .280/.340/.475 slash line with 20 home runs, 55 RBI, and 16 stolen bases.

Trevor Cahill fell to 1-8 on the season after allowing three runs over six innings against the Reds on Tuesday.

Cahill rejoined the D'Backs' rotation to begin the second half. Tuesday's outing was, at the very least, not a nightmare for the right-hander, holding the Reds to seven hits and no walks while striking out three. The control has been better, but he hasn't been missing many bats. On the season, he owns a 5.59 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and a 53/27 K/BB ratio. He'll try to continue his improvement next Sunday at home against the Pirates.
Jul 29 - 9:55 PM

Mike Leake finished out the month of July with a superb start, shutting the D'Backs out over 7 2/3 innings to pick up his eighth win on Tuesday.

The last two months haven't been so kind to the right-hander, as he entered June with a 2.92 ERA and exits July at 3.53. On this night, however, he was dominant, limiting the Arizona lineup to five hits while walking none and striking out eight. Leake left with two outs in the eighth after hitting Miguel Montero with a pitch to put runners on first and second, but reliever Jonathan Broxton retired Mark Trumbo to the threat. Leake will try to begin August on the right foot when he faces the Marlins on the road next Sunday.
Jul 29 - 9:51 PM

Aroldis Chapman slammed the door on the D'Backs in a 1-2-3 ninth inning on Tuesday, preserving a win for starter Mike Leake.

For the 33rd consecutive time this season, and 45th consecutive time since August 21 last season, Chapman recorded at least one strikeout -- a major league record. The fireballing lefty is now 23-for-25 in save chances with a 2.16 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, and 67/11 K/BB ratio in 33 1/3 innings.

Twins pitching prospect Jose Berrios left Tuesday's start for Double-A New Britain in the second inning with shoulder tightness.

The Twins are having some rotten luck lately with their pitching prospects, as Kohl Stewart just went down with a shoulder injury of his own. Berrios, who was ranked before the season by Baseball America as the club's No. 5 prospect, will be re-evaluated before it's determined how much time he might miss.

Jay Bruce - OF - Reds

Jay Bruce will return from the bereavement list on Friday.

Bruce is missing the first of three games on Tuesday following the death of his grandfather. The Reds are using Skip Schumaker in right field Tuesday.
Jul 29 - 9:26 PM

Matt Lindstrom (ankle) might need only 2-3 rehab appearances before being activated.

He's expected to begin a rehab assignment any time now after a successful simulated game Tuesday. That would put Lindstrom on pace to return in early August if all goes well. The reliever said Tuesday that he'd "like to keep closing" once he's activated. The White Sox haven't made any proclamations one way or the other, but Lindstrom is definitely worth stashing for those speculating.
