Braves signed LHP Sean Burnett to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Burnett inked a minor league deal with the Dodgers in early April but exercised his May 1 opt-out and will now join a team with maybe the worst bullpen depth chart in the league. He should move quickly to the majors and could even be pitching in high-leverage situations for the Braves by the end of the month. The veteran lefty had a very good showing this spring in Nationals camp and he was off to a pretty good start with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate.

Red Sox optioned INF Marco Hernandez to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The move opens up a roster spot for Carson Smith, who will join the Red Sox bullpen on Tuesday after missing the first month of the season with a flexor muscle strain. Hernandez was only in the majors for a couple days.

Cole Hamels allowed four earned runs over five innings Sunday in the Rangers' loss to the Angels.

Hamels was scratched from his last turn in the Texas rotation due to soreness in his left groin and he had his worst start of the season in his return Sunday. The left-hander walked four and gave up seven hits to a struggling Anaheim offense, watching his season ERA rise from 2.52 to 3.30. Hamels should be better prepared physically for his next turn on the road against the Marlins.

Brandon Phillips (finger) went 0-for-4 with a walk on Sunday against the Pirates.

Phillips missed some time last week with bruises on his left hand and shin, but he was pretty much a full-go for the Reds' weekend set in Pittsburgh. The veteran second baseman is hitting .273/.313/.403 in 77 at-bats this season for a rebuilding Cincinnati team.
May 2 - 8:40 AM

Christian Vazquez blasted a two-run homer in the eighth inning on Sunday, propelling the Red Sox to an 8-6 victory over the Yankees.

In a back-and-forth contest, Vazquez provided the biggest blow of the night launching the first pitch he saw from Dellin Betances over the Green Monster in left to break a 6-6 tie. It was the young backstop's only hit in the ballgame as he finished 1-for-4. It has been a struggle at the dish to this point for Vazquez, hitting just .225/.279/.375 with one homer and two RBI.
May 1 - 11:59 PM

Craig Kimbrel slammed the door on the Yankees on Sunday, working a scoreless ninth inning to protect a one-run lead.

Kimbrel retired all three hitters he faced without issue, recording a pair of strikeouts in the process. He now sports a 3.75 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 21/5 K/BB ratio through 12 innings on the season while successfully converting eight of his first nine save chances.
May 1 - 11:53 PM

David Price picked up his fourth victory of the season on Sunday despite allowing six runs on eight hits over his seven innings of work against the Yankees.

The left-hander struck out three and walked one on the evening. Alex Rodriguez was his biggest nemesis, contributing a two-run homer and two-run double to the damage against him. While he is 4-0 and has yet to lose a game as a member of the Red Sox, Price owns an unsightly 6.14 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over his first 36 2/3 innings. He'll look for better results when he takes on these same Yankees in New York on Saturday.
May 1 - 11:50 PM

Alex Rodriguez homered, doubled and drove home four runs as the Yankees were outlasted by the Red Sox on Sunday night in Boston.

A-Rod blasted a two-run homer off David Price in the third inning then added on a two-run double his next time up in the fifth. The 40-year-old slugger has really picked up his offense in the past few weeks, and is now slashing .203/.286/.464 with five homers and 12 RBI on the season.
