Lamar Miller is listed as the Dolphins' starting running back on the latest depth chart.

Sep 2 - 10:27 AM

Coach Mike Pettine continued to praise Ben Tate as a three-down running back, calling Tate the "guy you can trust the most right now."

After the Browns cut Dion Lewis and Chris Ogbonnaya, Tate became the clear leader for third-down duties. He already had early-down work sewn up after a strong preseason coupled with Terrance West's disappointing summer. "He’s been solid in protection. I think he does a nice job catching the ball," Pettine said. "Probably the guy you can trust the most right now would be Ben." Look for Tate to carry the ball 15-20 times per game under OC Kyle Shanahan. There's potential for high-end RB1 production. Tate just needs to stay healthy.

Giants MLB Jon Beason (foot) returned to practice Monday and expects to play Week 1 against the Lions.

Whether Beason plays a part-time or full-time role remains to be seen. Monday was his first practice since tearing a ligament and breaking a bone in his toe in June, so there's ground to be made up. The Giants are going to lean on their defense early on while the offense tries to work through its preseason problems. Beason is an integral part of the Giants' run defense at the MIKE spot.

Coach Mike Pettine said he believes undrafted CB Robert Nelson has a chance to be a starter at some point.

Nelson profiles as a slot corner at 5'9/175. The UDFA attended Cleveland's rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. The Browns then signed Nelson, and he ended up making the 53-man roster. After spending a few years looking for a complement to Joe Haden, the Browns now have one of the deeper cornerback depth charts in the league. Nelson will likely cover kicks as a rookie.

Ravens re-signed CB Derek Cox.

Cox, 28 later this month, was signed by the Ravens last week. He was then apart of final cuts. Cox had drawn interest from at least one other team, but chose to re-up in Baltimore where the cornerback depth chart is churning behind starters Lardarius Webb and Jimmy Smith. Cox will compete for a role in sub-packages, likely as an outside corner when Webb moves to the slot.

Bucs OC Jeff Tedford (medical procedure) may miss Week 1 against the Panthers.

52-year-old Tedford underwent a "medical procedure" last week. He's been working part-time from home since then, and may not be ready to return to the coaching box by Sunday. If Tedford can't be in attendance, QBs coach Marcus Arroyo will call the offensive plays. Tampa Bay's offensive line was dominated all preseason. They have a tough test against Carolina's front seven.

The Houston Chronicle doesn't expect Ryan Mallett to challenge for the Texans' starting job anytime soon.

Per beat writer Brian Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick is "locked in" as coach Bill O'Brien's starter. Mallett is being brought to Houston as a quarterback with familiarity of the offense. We don't doubt that Fitzpatrick is the guy for right now, but once he struggles, because he certainly will, the Mallett chants will begin.

Third-round OG Gabe Jackson is the Raiders' starting left guard.

Jackson was competing with veteran Khalif Barnes for the job for most of camp, and ended up getting the nod after Barnes supplanted Menelik Watson at right tackle. Jackson is a strong power blocker at 6'3/336. The Raiders' line reads LT Donald Penn, LG Jackson, C Stefen Wisniewski, RG Austin Howard, RT Barnes.
