Cardinals DB Tyrann Mathieu (knee) has been cleared for 11-on-11 drills.

It's an important step for the Honey Badger in his quest to be ready for Week 1. The Cardinals are still going to err on the side of caution, but Mathieu has a legit shot at being ready for the opener.

CSN Bay Area doesn't consider WR Stevie Johnson a lock to win the 49ers' No. 3 job.

Johnson is facing tougher than expected competition from fellow veteran Brandon Lloyd. Per reporter Matt Maiocco, Johnson has yet to develop chemistry with Colin Kaepernick. Maiocco believes Johnson would have to take a pay-cut from his $3.925 million salary if he can't nail down No. 3 duties. In that scenario, Johnson could be best off calling the 49ers' bluff and hitting the open market.

ESPN New York believes Stephen Hill has yet to sew up a roster spot.

Hill has only one catch through 70 preseason snaps, and been "all over the map" in practice. Hill's theoretical upside is looking less and less likely to develop, though we'd ultimately expect him to keep his roster spot.

Rams RB Isaiah Pead (torn ACL) has cleared waivers, and reverted to injured reserve.

Pead is under contract through 2015, but didn't show enough through his first two years in the league for a team to take a chance on him as he recovers from a major knee injury. Pead will be on the outside looking in of the 53-man roster next summer.

Derek Carr (ribs) will sit out Friday's preseason game against the Packers.

It's a major missed opportunity for the second-round signal caller, who could have put heat on struggling starter Matt Schaub with a strong performance in the Raiders' regular-season dress rehearsal. Schaub is now all but guaranteed to be under center come Week 1. Carr will probably still make starts sooner rather than later, however.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers are still working on an extension with walk-year CB Cortez Allen.

The Steelers' No. 1 corner is making just $645,000 in the final year of his rookie contract. Although the cornerback market has been deflated in recent years, it would behoove the Steelers to get something done now instead of waiting until next offseason, where they could be cornered into using the franchise tag.

Chiefs ILB Joe Mays is undergoing wrist surgery

Mays suffered the injury in last week's preseason game against the Panthers. It is unclear when he will return. For now, he should be considered doubtful for Week 1. Mays is slotted in opposite Derrick Johnson. James-Michael Johnson is the next man up on the depth chart if Mays isn't ready for the opener.

The Steelers insist they're committed to running more no-huddle offense this season.

"We practice it all the time," C Maurkice Pouncey said. "It's big for us," were the words of Antonio Brown. "(It's) going to be a key for us this year to get things going fast and catch defenses off-balance and let Ben (Roethlisberger) pick and read his reads, and it gives us the opportunity to play fast." The Steelers' pledges to run more no-huddle used to ring hollow, but they should be serious this time after it helped turn around their 2013. It's not outside the realm of possibility that Roethlisberger matches last year's top-eight fantasy finish.
