Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Thursday that he could shorten Kevin Gausman's appearances in the final two weeks of camp to prepare him to possibly be used as a reliever.

Gausman threw one inning in Thursday's game and it appears he may continue to be used in short spurts rather than be stretched out more. "Until everything shakes out, I want him to be ready to do both things," Showalter said of Gausman. It's really disappointing news, as this is the first we've heard of the possibility of Gausman potentially not being a part of the rotation. He's out-pitched Ubaldo Jimenez this spring, but it sounds like the latter might beat him out for a rotation spot, anyway. Gausman is a potential breakout fantasy performer if he's given a starting job, so keep close tabs on this one.

Paul Goldschmidt went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Thursday's 3-3 Cactus League tie with the Padres.

Goldschmidt hasn't registered a hit since March 20, a span of four hitless games. The first baseman missed a large chunk of last season with a fractured hand, but still should be held in extremely high regard as he was in 2013, when he led the league in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, and OPS.

Yonder Alonso singled three times and walked in four plate appearances on Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

Alonso brought his Cactus League average up to .300 (12-for-40) with the effort, but he's only shown a modicum of power this spring with three doubles and a home run. Considering his position, Alonso's bat leaves much to be desired as he's yet to cross the 10-homer threshold over parts of five major league seasons.

Chad Gaudin will be examined after feeling tingling in his fingers due to the ongoing nerve issues in his neck.

Gaudin had surgery a couple years ago but has never been able to totally shake the nerve problems, as this is the second time in the last week he's had issues. He's been shut down and will be sent for an exam before the next course of action is determined.

Odrisamer Despaigne held the Diamondbacks to one run over five innings in Thursday's Cactus League start.

Despaigne allowed seven hits and two walks, but was able to dance out of trouble for the most part. He racked up four strikeouts in the effort. The right-hander is battling Brandon Morrow for the No. 5 spot in the Padres' starting rotation. He owns a 2.12 ERA with an 11/6 K/BB ratio over 17 innings this spring, out-pitching Morrow thus far.

Chase Anderson pitched well in Thursday's start versus the Diamondbacks, allowing one run over six innings.

The right-hander yielded six hits and walked two while striking out four, lowering his Cactus League ERA to 1.84 in the process. With how well he has pitched this spring, it's difficult to envision a scenario in which Anderson hasn't already earned a spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation, but nothing has been made official yet. Trevor Cahill and Daniel Hudson are Anderson's remaining competitors, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that the Braves have "continued to talk to other clubs" about their interest in Wandy Rodriguez.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said last week that Rodriguez had secured a spot in the club's rotation, but it's possible they'll deal him if they find an offer to their liking. Ultimately, they seem likely to gamble that the left-hander stays healthy and pitches well, upping his trade value before the deadline.

Jonathan Lucroy went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, and a run scored as the Brewers ran roughshod over the Mariners 15-1 on Thursday.

Lucroy has only racked up 23 at-bats this spring due to a hamstring injury, but he's hit well when he's been in the lineup, batting .435 with a pair of doubles, a pair of homers, and six RBI. Lucroy has been among the best at his position for several years and should once again provide tremendous fantasy value. He led the league in doubles with 51 last season while hitting .301 with 13 home runs and 69 RBI.
