Carlos Gonzalez (finger) went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored in his return from the disabled list Friday.

He also made a pair of impressive defensive plays. Gonzalez ended up missing just over a month following surgery to remove a benign tumor from his left index finger. The 28-year-old wasn't his usual elite self prior to the procedure, so fantasy owners will have to hope that improved production is on the way now that the issue has been resolved.

Jeff Samardzija took a complete-game loss after giving up three runs in eight innings Friday against the Mariners.

It was Samardzija's fourth career complete game and first of 2014. He allowed five hits, walked none and struck out five.

Drew Stubbs launched a two-run homer Friday against the Twins.

It was his 10th home run of the season. Four of them have come in his last six games. His playing time is going to take a hit now that Carlos Gonzalez is back from the disabled list, but he still figures to get regular at-bats against left-handed starters at the very least.

Brian Dozier went 2-for-4 with two singles and a walk Friday against the Rockies.

Dozier entered Friday's action with no walks over his first nine games this month. However, now that he has one, he's up to 52 on the year, which already surpasses his total from all of last year. The 27-year-old isn't going to hit for average, but his improved on-base ability has helped keep his value afloat this season.

Stephen Vogt had another nice game Friday, going 2-for-3 with a homer against the Mariners.

Vogt has hit in 11 straight and delivered two hits in five of his last six games. He's looking like a nice stopgap for those mixed leaguers who lost Yadier Molina.

Matt Holliday hit a go-ahead solo homer in the ninth inning to lead the Cardinals to a 7-6 victory over the Brewers on Friday.

It finished off a huge night for Holliday, who reached base in four out of his five plate appearances. He also had a single, two doubles, and a walk. The home run was his first since June 16 and just his sixth on the season. The 34-year-old is currently on pace to hit fewer than 20 home runs for the first time since 2005.
Jul 12 - 12:36 AM

Trevor Rosenthal delivered a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the Brewers to convert his 28th save of the season.

Rosenthal struck out two batters in the inning and worked around a leadoff single from Aramis Ramirez to finish off the victory. It hasn't always been pretty for the 24-year-old this season -- he has walked 26 batters in 43 2/3 innings to go along with a 1.37 WHIP -- but he's tied with Atlanta's Craig Kimbrel for the MLB lead with 28 saves.

Joe Kelly was tagged for six runs in just three innings in his return from the disabled list Friday against the Brewers.

In retrospect, perhaps another minor league rehab start would have been a good idea. Kelly allowed seven hits and two walks and needed 78 pitches to complete his three innings of work. He'll look for better results when the second half resumes.
