Matt Carpenter went 3-for-5 and belted a solo home run in a losing effort against the Cubs on Friday afternoon.

Carpenter’s solo shot off Travis Wood in the fifth inning was his sixth homer of the season. He’s enjoying another very solid season atop the Cardinals lineup, slashing .282/.375/.393 with 65 runs scored and 36 RBI.

Joe Kelly was hit hard in Friday’s no-decision against the Cubs, allowing five runs on eight hits over just 4 2/3 frames.

The right-hander struck out four and walked two on the afternoon. Most of the damage against him came via the long ball, with Ryan Sweeney blasting a three-run homer in the second inning and opposing starter Travis Wood connecting on a solo shot in the fourth. He’ll look to get back on track when he does battle against the Padres in San Diego on Thursday.

Kyle Gibson (back) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday, and if all goes well he will make his next start on Tuesday against the Royals.

He had been scheduled to start on Wednesday, but was scratched due to back stiffness. The 26-year-old owns an 8-8 record, 4.19 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 54/30 K/BB ratio over 107 1/3 innings through his first 19 starts.

Michael Saunders (oblique) began taking swings in the indoor batting cages on Friday.

It's seen as a good sign in the outfielder's recovery from a strained left oblique. He has been sidelined since July 11, and is likely to need a minor league rehab assignment before returning, so don't expect him back with the M's until early August.
Jul 25 - 7:45 PM

Manny Machado (back) remains out of the Orioles starting lineup for the fourth consecutive game on Friday.

The annoying pain in his lower back continues to linger, and it remains unclear when exactly he will be able to rejoin the O's lineup. Ryan Flaherty will get the start at the hot corner in his absence.
Jul 25 - 7:11 PM

Gerrit Cole (lat) is scheduled to make his first minor league rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle indicated that he would be limited to 80-85 pitches in the ballgame. If all goes well, he could be cleared to rejoin the Pirates rotation shortly afterwards.
Jul 25 - 7:09 PM

Hanley Ramirez (wrist) has returned to the Dodgers starting lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

Ramirez has been sidelined since Sunday, when he was drilled on the hand by a fastball from Trevor Rosenthal. The oft-injured superstar has had his share of nicks and bruises this season, but has still managed to appear in 86 games, hitting .273/.372/.463 with 11 homers and 49 RBI.
Jul 25 - 7:07 PM

Yankees sent RHP Bruce Billings outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Billings was designated for assignment earlier in the week to make room on the 40-man roster for Chris Leroux, and passed through waivers unclaimed. He'll continue to function as additional bullpen depth in the minor leagues.
