Clayton Kershaw fired two perfect innings in Thursday's start against the White Sox.

Kershaw faced the minimum, fanning three in the process. Would you expect anything less from the pitcher who has led the league in ERA in four consecutive seasons? The lefty, who took home both NL MVP and Cy Young honors, finished with a 21-3 record, a 1.77 ERA, and a 239/31 K/BB ratio in 198 1/3 innings last season.
Mar 5 - 5:46 PM

Hunter Pence will undergo X-rays on his hand.

Mar 5 - 5:46 PM

Matt Cain (elbow, ankle) is expected to make his first Cactus League start around March 10.

The Giants have eased Cain into things this season, as he's coming off surgery to remove bone chips from his throwing elbow as well as a minor procedure on his right ankle. He faced hitters in Giants' camp Thursday without incident and has plenty of time to get stretched out for his first turn when the regular season gets underway.
Mar 5 - 5:18 PM

Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia pitched scoreless fifth and sixth innings in the Orioles' 3-2 win over the Rays on Thursday.

Garcia, who has been flashing a mid-90s fastball in camp, struck out two. It's going to be difficult for the Orioles to keep him, considering he hasn't pitched higher than A ball, but he has a pretty tantalizing arm. If he doesn't make the team, he'd go on waivers and potentially be offered back to the Red Sox.
Mar 5 - 5:17 PM

Tim Hudson (ankle) expects to pitch in a game around March 11.

Hudson underwent surgery in early January to remove bone spurs from his right ankle, but he threw to hitters Thursday morning with no issues. He can't afford any setbacks, but there's still time for him to get ready for the start of the season.
Mar 5 - 5:16 PM

Nate Karns started and pitched two scoreless innings versus the Orioles on Thursday.

Karns is a candidate to make the Rays rotation, but it really hurts his chances that he has options and Alex Colome doesn't. Still, if Karns pitches well this spring and Colome doesn't, it's possible the Rays will stick Colome in the pen or trade him.
Mar 5 - 5:15 PM

Joey Butler doubled and homered off the bench to drive in both Rays runs Thursday against the Orioles.

The soon-to-be 29-year-old Butler had 12 at-bats with the Rangers in 2013 and five for the Cardinals in 2014 before spending the second half of last season in Japan. He's typically been an excellent OBP guy, but also a huge strikeout guy in the minors, and most teams have figured he didn't have the power to make up for all of the strikeouts. The Rays will probably start him off in Triple-A unless they can find a taker for David DeJesus this spring.
Mar 5 - 5:13 PM

Hunter Pence left Thursday's Cactus League game after he was hit in the hand by a pitch.

Pence walked down to first base initially before leaving the game. The Giants should pass along an update soon, but obviously they can't afford to lose him from the middle of their lineup. Pence has appeared in all 162 games in back-to-back seasons.
