Masahiro Tanaka yielded four runs and nine hits in six innings Wednesday in a loss to the Rangers.

Most of Tanaka's issues this year have been with the home run ball. Tonight, though, he never allowed one. However, he did walk three and strike out just three. He had just one previous three-walk start this season and none with as few strikeouts. In fact, he had a 71/10 K/BB ratio in his previous 11 starts. So, this one looks like an aberration. He gets a bumbling Red Sox lineup next time out.

Shin-Soo Choo went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's win over the Yankees.

Choo was hitting eighth tonight despite his recent success. He's batting .387 with nine RBI in nine games since the All-Star break. Still, he's probably not going to get another look at the top of the order unless Delino DeShields Jr. slumps.

Carlos Beltran hit his eighth homer Wednesday against the Rangers.

Beltran didn't get to partake in the fun of Tuesday's 21-5 game, having received the night off. The homer was his first in eight games since he returned from the disabled list. He's 5-for-26 with two RBI overall in that span.

Anthony DeSclafini shut out the Cardinals for seven innings, allowing just three hits, to win Wednesday.

DeSclafini won for the first time since June 9. He's been pretty mediocre since opening the season with a 1.04 ERA in April, but there's little reason to disappoint. Some thought he might be a long-term reliever when the Reds picked him up from the Marlins in the Mat Latos trade, but he's shown enough to suggest he'll last a middle-of-the-rotation guy instead.
Jul 30 - 12:24 AM

John Lackey took a tough loss after allowing just one run and two hits over eight innings Wednesday against the Reds.

Anthony DeSclafini was just a little better. Lackey was at 88 pitches and probably could have gone for the complete-game loss tonight if the Cardinals hadn't needed to pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the eighth. He's now 9-6 with a 2.78 ERA.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Mets backed out of the proposed trade to acquire Carlos Gomez from the Brewers due to concern over his hip issue.

Scott Boras, the agent for Gomez, has stated that his client is "injury-free" and that he has "no problem whatsoever" with his hip. The Mets will have to continue shopping elsewhere to acquire the big bat they would like to add to the outfield.

Jay Bruce - OF - Reds

Jay Bruce hit his 17th homer Wednesday to score the only run in the Reds' 1-0 defeat of the Cardinals.

Randal Grichuk had a play on the homer in center, but couldn't quite get there. Bruce has overcome a tough start to hit .288 with 10 homers and 33 RBI in 184 at-bats since the beginning of June. He should bring back a couple of nice pieces if the Reds decide to move him.

Angels optioned RHP Mike Morin to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 24-year-old right-hander has struggled in his 29 appearances with the Angles this season, compiling a 7.43 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 23/7 K/BB ratio over 23 innings. He'll look to get back on track in the minors before hopefully rejoining the Angels bullpen later in the summer.
