Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Tavon Austin's new contract is a reflection of what they believe he can do in the future.

Austin landed a four-year, $42-million extension despite never topping 475 receiving yards in a season. "We’ve seen what he’s capable of and we’re hoping we’re going to get a lot more than what we’ve seen in the past," Fisher said. "He’s very, very talented with the ball in his hands. He is a problem to defend against and we hear that week after week after week." To Fisher's point, Austin did chip in 434 rushing yards last season, and he has three punt-return touchdowns in his career. While the price tag was steep, the Rams had to keep their only weapon in the passing game. Austin is a nice pick at his 11th-round ADP.

Texans QB Brock Osweiler said first-round WR Will Fuller is a "very special football player."

"Obviously, everybody knows about his speed -- they saw him all last season, they saw him at the combine -- but it’s his work ethic," Osweiler said. "That’s what really makes him special." Osweiler has looked the rookie's way early and often this preseason, and Fuller has rewarded his quarterback with eight catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Locked into the starting lineup, Fuller is a very interesting late-round grab.

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta reports the Jets do not think Bryce Petty is ready to be the No. 2 quarterback.

If true, it would mean New York is all but certain to hang onto Geno Smith, although Mehta adds the team has received "soft interest" for their backup quarterback. The best scenario for the Jets would be for Petty to prove he is ready, allowing them to trade Geno and keep just three quarterbacks. As of now, it does not look like that will happen.

Ravens waived/released QB Jerrod Johnson, LB Kavell Conner, G Jarrell Broxton, DT Trevon Coley, WR Dobson Collins, C Anthony Fabiano, WR Chuck Jacobs, LB Mario Ojemudia, and WR Darius White.

Baltimore also placed TE Ben Watson (Achilles') and CB Kyle Arrington (concussion) on injured reserve. The Ravens still need to make four more moves by tomorrow's deadline.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones "can’t imagine a scenario" where Tony Romo (back) is not the starting quarterback when healthy.

On its face, that sounds like a strong statement, but Jones qualified the comments just seconds later. "But things happen. You know that. You know what happened to Bledsoe and Brady," Jones continued. "I’m sure Tony’s aware of that. But the reality is, Tony’s going to come back for us and play great, we believe." The reality is Romo being able to get healthy is a bigger question than his spot on the depth chart if he is able to get back on the field, but Jones leaving any wiggle room is at the very least interesting.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports Carson Wentz (ribs) was still in pain over the weekend.

Wentz suffered a hairline fracture to his ribs in the preseason opener. The Eagles' plan was to get Wentz work in the finale Thursday night, but it seems unlikely they push him if he is still dealing with discomfort, even though he could certainly use the work. The rookie will open the season firmly glued to the bench.

Steelers RT Marcus Gilbert said he will "play through" the elbow injury he suffered in Friday night's preseason game.

Gilbert reportedly suffered a hyperextended left elbow Friday night against the Saints. "It is significant, but I’m going to have to push through it," Gilbert said. "It’s not going to be something that’s going to keep me off the field ... It will be good for the first game of the season." Despite the optimism, Gilbert should be considered questionable for Week 1.

Bryan Stork failed his physical with the Redskins and has reverted back to the Patriots.

In a saga which refuses to end, Stork has now been cut, traded, retired, and now reverted in the last week. Again the owners of his rights, the Patriots will almost certainly release Stork before tomorrow's deadline. Washington will have to look elsewhere for interior line depth.
