Cardinals optioned RHP John Brebbia to Triple-A Memphis.

Brebbia had made just two appearances -- both of them scoreless, hitless innings -- since his promotion to the St. Louis bullpen on April 8. The 27-year-old right-hander should get another shot soon.

Reds fired manager Bryan Price.

And pitching coach Mack Jenkins will follow him out the door. Price takes the fall for a Reds team that has opened the season with a dreadful 3-15 record and -46 run differential, both worst in the major leagues. Price didn't have a winning season in his four-plus years in Cincinnati, though he also never had a very good roster. Jim Riggleman will take over as interim manager, Louisville manager Pat Kelly has been promoted to be the Reds' bench coach, and Pensacola pitching coach Danny Darwin is now on the major league staff.

Evan Longoria went 3-for-4 and clubbed a two-run homer during Wednesday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Diamondbacks.

He opened the scoring by taking starter Robbie Ray deep with Buster Posey aboard in the sixth inning. Longoria also doubled, singled and walked in the ballgame. The stellar day gave a nice boost to his .241/.267/.500 slash line. He has three homers and seven RBI on the season so far.

Chris Stratton held the Diamondbacks to one run on five hits over seven innings but did not earn a decision on Wednesday.

The bullpen blew the lead in the ninth to cost him the win. He struck out eight batters without issuing a walk. He fired seven innings of shutout baseball and went back out for the eighth inning. He gave up a leadoff double to Nick Ahmed and a triple to Jarrod Dyson before being relieved. He was fortunate the bullpen was able to strand that runner at third base or it could have taken the shine off his magnificent outing. Stratton is 1-1 with a phenomenal 2.22 ERA in four starts.

Christian Villanueva was forced from Wednesday's game by a bruised hand.

Villanueva was hit in the fifth and departed a couple of innings later. X-rays were negative, so he's day-to-day.
Apr 19 - 2:01 AM

Hunter Strickland blew a save by allowing a run in the ninth inning but picked up a win against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

He gave up back-to-back doubles to Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock to start the inning but was able to finish the inning without further damage. He lucked into the win when the Giants scored twice in the 10th inning. Strickland now has two blown saves to go with his two saves. He should hold onto the closer's job due to his 2.25 ERA with seven strikeouts in eight innings. Cory Gearrin pitched the 10th and gave up a run but got his first save.

Corey Seager went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a walk in the Dodgers' 13-4 rout of the Padres on Wednesday.

After a slow start, Seager has eight hits and five runs scored during the Dodgers' current four-game winning streak. He's lifted his average from .196 to .254.
Apr 19 - 1:51 AM

Kenta Maeda won despite allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Padres.

Maeda struck out 10 tonight, but he also gave up eight hits. It's been the story of his season to date; he's fanned 24 in 14 1/3 innings, yet also surrendered 20 hits. It's not quite what his fantasy owners were hoping for, but he remains a mixed-league asset.
